OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Tim Burt

Tim Burt knew he wanted to be a sportswriter at the age of 11 when he started writing a weekly newsletter for friends playing in a neighborhood pick-up baseball league.

He’s been writing ever since, first in high school in Long Beach, Calif., the Loudspeaker at Long Beach Wilson. He did the same at Long Beach City College at the Viking and at Long Beach State at the Daily 49er, where he was editor and sports editor.

Tim was definitely influenced by his father, who was a writer.

Tim graduated from Long Beach State with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism in 1978. After that, he had an internship at the Long Beach Press Telegram, where he covered news and sports.

He worked for a chain of papers in Southeast Los Angeles from 1979-1984 before becoming sports editor of the Irvine World News, an Orange County Register publication, in 1984.

Tim now covers girls and boys lacrosse for the Register and OC Varsity. He also covers most of the other sports in the county.

The world of sports is Tim’s passion, so when he’s not covering it, he’s usually watching it on television. He’s a big Lakers and Angels fan.

He enjoys playing softball on Sunday and pick-up basketball, half-court that is.

Long Beach is his hometown, but he calls Orange County home now and is excited about covering future events for OC Varsity and the OC Register.
