Water polo recruiting: Former Irvine standout headed to Air Force

Former Irvine water polo standout Zack Kamai has been accepted at the Air Force Academy and will be playing for the men’s team at the academy, his father, Marold, reports.

Kamai also aspires to be a pilot.

He finished his varsity water polo career at Irvine in 2010. He attended a prep school in the fall of 2011.

At Air Force, Zamai will join class of 2012 products Eric Bungcag (Villa Park) and Andy Santala (Aliso Niguel). This fall, the Air Force program is expected to return Josh Stedman (Troy), Cruz Smithson (Servite) and Dillon Fisher (Villa Park) among others.

Father of injured player says new video shows son being struck

The father of an Irvine water polo player who alleged his son was choked under water and struck in the throat during a match last week against Corona del Mar plans to document the incident with school officials and the CIF-Southern Section.

The player, senior Zack Kamai, suffered injuries to his throat in the Pacific Coast League match on Thursday. He received treatment from paramedics before returning to the game.

The boy’s father, Marold Kamai, said Monday that he will send a letter about the incident to the CIF-Southern Section, Newport-Mesa Unified School District, and to administrators at Corona del Mar and Irvine high schools.
