Girls soccer: Yorba Linda set to host first annual Soccer With Hope tournament

December 10th, 2012, 1:00 pm by

Over the last three years, the Yorba Linda girls’ soccer team has partnered with the With Hope Amber Craig Memorial Foundation to take up the cause of suicide prevention with an annual fundraising match.

This year that partnership has spawned a week-long tournament to further promote and advocate that message, as the Mustangs will host the first annual Soccer With Hope Tournament this week.

Capistrano Valley, Esperanza, El Dorado, Pacifica, Righetti, and Tesoro will join the Mustangs in a seven-team competition at Yorba Linda High where all proceeds from the matches will go to the foundation.

Baseball: Yorba Linda’s Paddon commits to Oregon

September 27th, 2012, 12:04 pm by

Yorba Linda senior pitcher Trent Paddon committed to Oregon, his father Rob confirmed via email.

Paddon, a 6-4, 215-pound right-hander,  had an outstanding junior year. His win-loss record of 3-4 included a pair of 1-0 losses, he posted a 1.43 ERA and struck out 75 in 63 innings with only 15 walks. He was named to All-Empire League and All-CIF teams.

Fryer on football: Tustin vs. Yorba Linda

September 19th, 2012, 8:06 pm by

EMPIRE LEAGUE

NO. 10 TUSTIN (4-0, 0-0) VS. NO. 20 YORBA LINDA (4-0, 0-0)

Where, when: Yorba Linda High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: OCVarsity colleague Dan Albano had Tustin at No. 6 (above Servite, Orange Lutheran, El Toro and San Clemente) on his Orange County top 10 ballot this week. It is true that Albano generally is on target, but that seems a bit high. Tustin has beaten teams that are a combined 3-12.

Tustin is, no doubt, the best team in the Empire League. Even with standout running backs Edward Tandy and DaVonte Young out last week because of injuries, the Tillers still steamrolled to a 42-14 victory over Beckman last week as Terence Martinez rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns.

Fryer on football: Yorba Linda vs. Esperanza

September 12th, 2012, 8:00 pm by

NO. 23 YORBA LINDA (3-0) VS. NO. 20 ESPERANZA (3-0)

Where, when: Yorba Linda High, 7 p.m.

Outlook: This is the first meeting of these neighboring schools. Esperanza for decades got all of the football-minded kids in the Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills/north-of-the-91 area. Well, the public-school ones. That area has been a Servite garden, too. A few years ago, Yorba Linda opened and many kids who would have gone to Esperanza now are going to Yorba Linda. Yorba Linda hired a fine coach, Jeff Bailey, and the Mustangs have gone 14-8 in two years of varsity football, including 10-2 last season. They beat El Modena and El Dorado in their first two games, and really impressed in last week’s 35-7 triumph over Brea Olinda. Esperanza worked the comeback trail to beat Capistrano Valley, 27-21, last week. That’s a good victory over a good team. Esperanza running back Troy Poole is averaging 140 yards a game and 9 yards a carry. The other Aztec Troy, quarterback Deluca, has completed 75 percent of his throws for 149 yards a game. Yorba’s offense has no single star, doing it so far with a mixture of guys. The feeling here is that Poole has his best game of the year and Esperanza wins. And let the rivalry begin!

Winner: Esperanza

Softball: Esperanza vs. Yorba Linda Live Blog Remix

May 17th, 2012, 9:56 pm by

I did a live blog from Esperanza High for Esperanza vs. Yorba Linda: The Neighborhood Scrap on Thursday in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM ESPERANZA HIGH

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Esperanza High for the first ever meeting between Yorba Linda and Esperanza and what better setting for this neighborhood scrap than the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 softball playoffs.

This is only the second year of varsity softball at Yorba Linda. Many players that would have played at Esperanza in the past play for Yorba Linda now that the school has opened. Most of the girls on both of these teams grew up playing for and against each other in rec ball and on travel ball teams over the years.

Yorba Linda tied for third place in the Empire League and brings a 16-8 record into this matchup. The Mustangs got their first playoff victory when they knocked off Agoura, 6-3, on Tuesday in a wild-card game.

Esperanza, ranked No. 9 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, won its second consecutive Century League title this season and brings a 10-game winning streak and a 22-6 record into the playoffs.

Softball: IT’S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME!!!

May 17th, 2012, 3:40 pm by

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME!!!!!

Finally … IT’S TIIIIIIIIIME!!!!!

I’m billing the first ever meeting between Yorba Linda and Esperanza as Yorba Linda vs. Esperanza: The Neighborhood Scrap.

Yorba Linda, are you ready?

Esperanza, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!!!

Esperanza ace Hayley Copeland, aka “The Matrix” because of the Neo-like movement she gets on her ball, takes to the circle first.

Taylor Townsend with a high chopper in the hole, but Espy third baseman Nicole Schroeder cuts it off and makes a fine play.  One down.

Copeland does that Matrix thing and strikes out Paige Von Sprecken. Two down.
