Irvine’s starting quarterback last season, Ryan Goodman, has transferred to Woodbridge and is eligible to play for the Warriors next season, Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said Tuesday.
“The family moved to the Woodbridge attendance area,” Gibson said.
“Ryan has been attending Woodbridge since the move. The appropriate CIF paperwork was filled out by both Woodbridge and Irvine, CIF cleared him to compete in both lacrosse, this year, and football next (season).”
In his junior year, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Goodman passed for 863 yards and seven touchdowns.
Goodman’s father, Jerry, confirmed the transfer but did not give a reason for his son’s move.
Irvine football coach Erik Terry declined to comment about the transfer.

Woodbridge offensive tackle David Patterson (6-5, 295) has committed to Fresno State, he said Monday.
The senior visited Fresno State over the weekend and committed to the Mountain West contender. He said he won’t make any more recruiting trips.
“There’s a new philosophy and direction of the football team … that really appealed to me,” Patterson wrote in an e-mail.
“USA Today has the Bulldogs ranked 20th in their early 2013 Top 25, so it’s a program a lot of people are looking at.”
Patterson said he spent time on his trip with Coach Tim DeRuyter and offensive line coach Cameron Norcross.
In his first season, DeRuyter guided the Bulldogs to a 9-3 season in 2012, including 6-0 at home.

Beckman is the No. 4 team in the Pacific Coast League. The Patriots and Irvine both have 2-3 league records, but because Beckman beat Irvine, Beckman is the league’s No. 4 playoff representative in the Southern Division.
The league’s order of representation for the playoffs: 1. Corona del Mar, 2. Northwood, 3. Woodbridge, 4. Beckman.
As the Pacific Coast League is the best league in the Southern Division, Beckman has a very good chance of getting the division’s one at-large berth when at-large teams are named Sunday at 8 a.m.

Northwood’s football team will take home the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the top football team in Irvine.
The Timberwolves stayed alive in the Fence Post race by defeating University, 42-28, Thursday night in a Pacific Coast League game.
But Northwood had to wait for the final outcome of Friday’s Woodbridge-Irvine game. Woodbridge defeated Irvine, 35-7, Friday night at Irvine High to clinch a playoff berth.
Northwood wins the Fence Post because it defeated Woodbridge. Irvine could have won the Fence Post by winning Friday night.
Northwood Coach Rick Curtis and Athletic Director Dean Toohey accepted the trophy after the game. Most of the Northwood players were attending a homecoming dance. Curtis said he plans to present the trophy to his players at school next week.
Northwood is advancing to the CIF-Southern Division playoffs as the No. 2 team behind league champion Corona del Mar. Woodbridge goes as the No. 3 team and Beckman could advance as an at-large entry.
Beckman won the Fence Post last year. Northwood won it in 2010.

Aliso Niguel’s Nathan Cole threw a school record 7 TDs and had 497 yards passing in a 50-41 victory over Woodbridge.

I didn’t get a chance to interview Aliso Niguel quarterback Nathan Cole after he completed 37 of 48 passes for a school-record 491 yards and seven touchdowns in Aliso Niguel’s 50-41 victory over Woodbridge in a nonleague game on Thursday Night at Irvine High.
If I did, I probably would have started off with something like this:
“Impressive. Most impressive. Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me.”
OK, I’d probably would have left out the “You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me.”
The fact is Cole, a 6-4, 220-pound senior, is “Impressive. Most impressive.” He’s got the frame, the quick release and the arm strength to play at the next level on Saturdays.
Cole was very much like El Toro’s Conner Manning in the way he spread his passes out to all his different receivers. Cole hit seven different receivers and hit four different receivers for touchdowns.
I don’t know how far Aliso Niguel will go in the Southwest Division playoffs, but the Wolverines are going to give teams some problems.
Mark Nov. 2 on your calendar because that’s when Aliso Niguel plays at Capistrano Valley in the regular-season finale with the Sea View League championship likely on the line. Cole vs. Capo Valley’s Mason Dossey in shootout between two gunslingers that are putting up huge stats this year.
THE THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL MADNESS SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
WOODBRIDGE (2-1) VS. SEGERSTROM (4-0)
Where, when: Segerstrom High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: This game will be remembered in November, when seedings are made for the CIF-Southern Section’s Southern Division playoffs. Segerstrom is ranked No. 1 in the division. Woodbridge is No. 3, behind Irvine.
Woodbridge beat Lancaster and Garden Grove before losing last week to Capistrano Valley, 42-29. That’s not terrible.
Capistrano Valley is 3-1 and will be a contender in the Sea View League, which overall is a better league than the Pacific Coast League, to which Woodbridge belongs.
Woodbridge offensive lineman David Patterson (6-5, 295) has been offered a preferred walk-on by Oregon, the senior said.
Patterson has been offered a scholarship by New Mexico State and is receiving recent interest from Oregon State, Pennsylvania, and Montana State.
The Ducks’ offer could mean that more recruiting interest will be heading Patterson’s way. He is ranked 25th in the latest OCVarsity recruiting rankings.
