Thursday Night Football Madness: The Postmortem

September 20th, 2012, 9:58 pm by

Cypress did not exactly deploy the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart technique a la The Bride in “Kill Bill,” but the Centurions put together a solid 23-10 victory over Western on Thursday night at Western High.

Running back Jake Brito is a dangerous weapon for the Centurions and he is capable of turning short passes into big plays.

Quarterback Jesse Dages is decent on his short passes, but his accuracy isn’t all that great when he goes downfield.

Cypress’ defense did give up 214 rushing yards to the Pioneers. That could be an issue when the Centurions play host to Tustin on Oct. 12. If Western got over 200 rushing yards on the Centurions, what will the Tillers’ might double-wing offense put up on Cypress? BTW, that’s Cypress’ Homecoming game. Yikes.

Cypress’ band is one of the best bands I’ve heard all year. Mr. FryDay Night pointed out that Cypress’ band is ready for the Rose Parade right now. I concur.

Cypress’ snack bar has excellent tacos and chili-cheese nachos.

Western is better than in recent years, but they have too many two-way players to do any real damage against the top teams in the Empire League and in the Southwest Division.

Thursday Night Football Madness: The Primer

September 20th, 2012, 3:31 pm by

We all need role models, people to look up to that show us a path to success, people that show us how to handle adversity, people that show us how to prevail against overwhelming odds.

So who would make the perfect role model for Thursday Night Football Madness? Beatrix Biddo. That’s right, The Bride, a former member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad.

The Bride never gave up even when she was shot in the head and left for dead at a Texas chapel on the day of her wedding rehearsal. After coming out of a coma, she systematically took out the members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad.

She faced overwhelming odds when she took out O-Ren Ishii’s Yakuza army, including the elite Crazy 88 and O-Ren’s personal bodyguard Gogo Yubari. Then there was her epic duel with O-Renherself.

She didn’t quit after getting blasted in the chest with buck shot by Budd. She used the martial arts techniques she learned from master Pai Mei to punch her way out of a coffin and claw her way to the surface. She picked up her Hattori Hanzo sword and went back on her rampage of vengeance.

The Bride went toe-to-toe with Elle Driver in an epic catfight for the ages.

It all led up to the final confrontation with Bill, her former lover and the leader of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. The Bride used the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique to vanquish Bill. Bill didn’t even know how to execute the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart technique.

The point is … and there is a point to this … the point is Thursday Night Football Madness is the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart technique of the OCVarsity Universe.

Fryer on football: Western vs. Cypress

EMPIRE LEAGUE

WESTERN (3-1 overall, 0-0 league) vs. CYPRESS (2-1 overall, 0-0 league)

Where, when: Western High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Seven-team leagues like the Century and Empire leagues begin league play this week. This game looks evenly matched. Western might have its best team in a few years.

The Pioneers, running game-dependant as usual on offense, beat three teams they should have – Costa Mesa, Katella and Anaheim – and lost to a team expected to beat Western, Corona del Mar.

Cypress, in its first year under veteran coach Bob Burt, has played in close games. The Centurions beat Centennial of Compton by five points in Week 0 and Cabrillo of Long Beach by seven in Week 3, and in between lost by two to El Modena.

Fryer’s Southwest Division vote

October 3rd, 2011, 12:11 pm by

Sportswriters are invited to vote in the CIF-Southern Section rankings of its 13 11-man football divisions. I only vote in the Pac-5, Southwest and Southern Divisions, per my choice as those are the divisions with which I have enough knowledge to make an informed vote.

Of course, I know some of you will say I should not vote on any divisions …

The Southwest Division vote …
