Fryer’s Southwest Division vote

October 3rd, 2011, 12:11 pm by

Sportswriters are invited to vote in the CIF-Southern Section rankings of its 13 11-man football divisions. I only vote in the Pac-5, Southwest and Southern Divisions, per my choice as those are the divisions with which I have enough knowledge to make an informed vote.

Of course, I know some of you will say I should not vote on any divisions …

The Southwest Division vote …

The Empire Strikes Back

September 23rd, 2010, 11:17 pm by

The Empire League is going to be wild this year. Going into Friday (9/24) games, the league’s teams are a combined 17-4 in nonleague play. The only Empire team not above .500 is Yorba Linda, the new school with no seniors that is 2-2. Kennedy, Pacifica, Cypress and Valencia are all undefeated going into Friday.

The league’s winning percentage of 81 is the best of the county’s leagues.

It is a seven-team league: Cypress, Kennedy, Pacifica, Tustin, Valencia, Western and Yorba Linda. The top four teams will get guaranteed entry into the playoffs in the Southwest Division. There is room for two at-large entries in the Southwest.

Frankly Fryer: Western vs. Fullerton

September 22nd, 2010, 6:06 pm by

WESTERN (1-1) VS. FULLERTON (2-1)

Where, when: Fullerton High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Western went 2-8 last year, its worst season in years, and more than the record was bad. So were players’ attitudes. It is a more committed, more mature group of Pioneers this year that could be a factor in the deep Empire League. They opened with a victory over Ocean View, and then fell to Paramount, 24-7, last week. Western takes on another good team in this game.
