Mater Dei girls basketball players Jordan Adams and Nirra Fields were selected to the McDonald’s All-American high school basketball team Thursday.

Adams, who has signed with USC, and Fields, who has signed with UCLA, were picked to play in the March 28 game in Chicago. They were among five Southern California players chosen for the boys and girls games.

Other Southern California players selected were: La Verne Lutheran’s Grant Jerrett (boys), Silverado of Victorville’s Candice Agee (girls) and Windward of Los Angeles’ Imani Stafford (girls).

Football recruiting: MV’s Pinner signs with USC, his ‘first and only choice’

February 1st, 2012, 3:55 pm by

Mission Viejo fullback Jahleel Pinner took the podium on Wednesday and promptly thanked his father, mother, grandmother, head coach and position coach, before closing his short speech with a special thanks to teammate Colby Cyburt for choosing UCLA.

“It’ll make me work that much harder,” said a smiling Pinner, bringing 24 student athletes and their parents to a chuckle during the Diablos’ signing day ceremony at Mission Viejo High.

Pinner officially signed a national letter of intent to USC on Wednesday but has had the Trojans written on his heart since he committed last May.

“USC was my first choice and my only choice,” Pinner said. “I was 110 percent. I’m excited. I’ve been ready to get this out of the way.”

The feeling might be mutual for USC, which landed the nation’s No. 1 ranked fullback by Rivals.com and Scout.com. Pinner is a versatile back at 6-0, 230 pounds, noted for his blocking, power, hands and selflessness. After mostly serving as a blocker his first year on varsity, Pinner had 102 touches as a senior and six touchdowns, including four as a receiver.

“That’s what they like about me, the way I take angles on my blocks, and my hands out of the backfield,” Pinner said. “When I go up there and they talk to me about my position, Stanley Havili, they always tell me I’m going to be that type of back.

“As long as I’m on the field I don’t really care.”

Why Mission Viejo OL Colby Cyburt picked UCLA

February 1st, 2012, 2:14 pm by

How persuasive was new UCLA coach Jim Mora? Mission Viejo offensive lineman Colby Cyburt forgot all about the Bruins’ turbulent season, cancelled an official visit to Stanford and wouldn’t take calls from USC.

Cyburt said Mora called him the week he was hired. And again the following week. and the week after that. And every week since.

“He doesn’t let up until he gets what he wants,” Cyburt said Wednesday at Mission Viejo High, where the Diablos had nine football players and 24 student athletes sign their national letters of intent. “He has the drive and determination that you need as a head coach. He’s so hands on. I haven’t talked to a head coach more than Jim Mora.”

Cyburt (6-5, 265), an All-County left tackle and 3-star prospect ranked among the top-50 linemen in the nation, said two of his priorities were academics and staying relatively close to home. His decision ultimately came down to Stanford and UCLA, which he watched closely as the Bruins recorded the NCAA’s first ever 6-8 season and fired Rick Neuheisel.

Fryer’s prediction: Barkley’s decision

December 22nd, 2011, 10:20 am by

I have written here, and said on the Sports Lodge radio show (I am on briefly with Rodger Lodge on KLAA/830 AM every Friday at 9:30 a.m.!!!) that Barkley will remain at USC for his senior year.

That’s what he is going to say today, when he makes some sort of announcement at 1 p.m. I have been convinced of this, and still am.

Why I think Barkley is staying at USC — because he feels he owes it to USC. That’s right — it’s not because HE thinks he deserves the Heisman or the national championship. Barkley is doing this because he wants to contribute to the return of USC football to the top.

Barkley is not a me-first guy. That’s what I learned about him when he was at Mater Dei.

Cynics kept saying he would go to the NFL for the cash and the glory. That’s not Matt Barkley. And he is not staying at USC for Matt-first reasons — which most people are going to conclude.

To those who don’t believe me — you’re all a bunch of grinches!

Update: And…Fryer was right. Barkley staying for one more year.

Esperanza, OLu players make college choices

October 25th, 2011, 12:25 pm by

Nick Catalano, senior outfielder at Esperanza, committed to Oregon according to Esperanza coach Mike Curran, who sure has sent a lot of Aztecs to college and pro ball. Catalano also is a fine football player, and has a 3.85 GPA.

Orange Lutheran senior shortstop Cody Nulph committed to Pepperdine, OLu coach Eric Borba tells us. Nulph has started at shortstop since the middle of his freshman year, and is among five Lancers to commit to a D1 school (the others: Brent Wheatley/USC; Art Moran-Vidrio/CS Fullerton; Conner Sullivan/Duke; Jason Martin/Long Beach State).

Reinhardt commitment to UNLV confirmed

August 11th, 2011, 2:34 pm by

Mater Dei’s Katin Reinhardt has committed to UNLV, Monarchs coach Gary McKnight confirmed this afternoon.

Reinhardt, a 6-foot-5 guard who will be a senior this school year, was All-Orange County first team and All-State in 2010-11.

He had committed to USC, then withdrew the commitment in May to make certain he made the right choice. Other schools, of course, then came after him.

My book on Reinhardt, without having seen him since March:
