Water polo: Davidson scores twice, but USA drops Vavic opener

January 30th, 2013, 10:11 pm by

Former Los Alamitos standout and current Griffins assistant coach Scott Davidson scored twice but the U.S. men’s water polo team opened the UANA World Aquatic Championship Qualification Tournament in Calgary with a disappointing, 10-6, loss to Canada on Wednesday.

USA usually defeats Canada but the Canadians led, 7-3, late in the third. The Canadians didn’t qualify for London but were 10th at Worlds in 2011.

The game marked the debut of U.S. interim head coach Jovan Vavic, the USC men’s and women’s coach. Captain Jeff Powers and Ryan Bailey – both UC Irvine products and silver medalists from 2008, each scored once.

The Americans need a top-two finish in the tournament to qualify for July’s World Championships in Barcelona. There are only two other men’s teams: Argentina and Brazil.

Santa Margarita’s Morgan Martinez has committed to UC Irvine, Ricks added.

Here’s what Loughlin said on twitter about her decision:

The center scored 136 goals last season to lead the Monarchs to a CIF Division 2 runner-up finish.

She also departs next week with the U.S. youth team bound for the FINA youth world championships in Australia.

Barr is a great get for the Bruins because she is a talented two-way player. She can guard 2 meters and score from center.
