The Register's Mark Saxon has an interesting story on former Orange Lutheran and current UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole and the real reasons why he didn't sign with the New York Yankees, who drafted him with the 28th pick last June.

And it had nothing to do with Scott Boras' role as his advisor.

Water polo recruiting: El Toro's White commits to Bruins

Yes, the UCLA Bruins have indeed landed arguably the two best high school water polo players in the country. El Toro attacker Griffin White said moments ago that he has signed with UCLA.

The Bruins also have received a commitment from Villa Park defender Josh Samuels, The Register's player of the year. Samuels planned on signing his letter later this afternoon.

Villa Park's Josh Samuels, The Register's player of the year in 2008, has signed with UCLA, he confirmed moments ago. What an awesome get for the Bruins, who are putting together one of the best classes in recent memory.

Samuels is considered the best high school player in the nation.

Irvine All-County lineman Nik Abele and Mission Viejo All-County defensive back Alex Mascarenas have signed with UCLA, accoridng to Bruin Report Online.

Abele and A-Mas might not be the biggest names in the Bruins' recruiting class but I think both will be key contributing players in the future.

The Orange County Register's Mark Saxon reports that Los Alamitos receiver Paul Richardson has verbally committed to play football for UCLA.

Richardson’s father, Paul Richardson Sr., was a receiver at UCLA and in the NFL.

Los Alamitos takes on top-ranked Tesoro at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tesoro in the first round of the CIF Pac-5 Division playoffs.

Top players to watch: Alex Mascarenas

He was an All-County cornerback as a sophomore and junior – a rare feat. Mascarenas had four interceptions last season, although opposing teams rarely tried to get a pass by him. He also will play receiver for the Diablos, and will pair with Kevin Chandler to catch passes from standout quarterback Allan Bridgford, making them one of the top receiving combos in the county. Mascarenas committed to UCLA.
