Baseball: Moore’s number to be retired at MD

September 20th, 2012, 11:49 am by

Ty Moore, pictured at left during his senior year at Mater Dei, will have his uniform number 29 retired by the school at a ceremony Friday at 10 a.m. at Mater Dei.

Moore was county player of the year twice, and as a senior was a CIF player of the year and was named state player of the year by Gatorade and CalHiSports.

Moore now is at UCLA. He was an outstanding pitcher, outfielder and hitter for the Monarchs.

Number 29 is a good number for Orange County baseball. Rod Carew wore it with the Angels, and four-time team MVP Bobby Knoop wore it for the Angels, too.

Football: Bunte transfers to Mission Viejo (updated)

September 5th, 2012, 12:51 pm by

UCLA-committed offensive lineman Erik Bunte transferred from Santa Margarita to Mission Viejo on Wednesday.

Mission Viejo assistant principal Ed Begany said Bunte (6-foot-7, 323 pounds) enrolled at Mission Viejo on Wednesday afternoon, and that transfer paperwork would be sent to the CIF-Southern Section office Thursday morning. Bunte started at guard for Santa Margarita last year, when the Eagles won CIF-SS Pac-5 Division and state Division 1 championships. He started at tackle the first two games this season.

He will be required to prove a change of residence before he can be declared athletically eligible at Mission Viejo.

No football at Blair of Pasadena?

July 16th, 2012, 2:36 pm by

Blair of Pasadena might not be able to field a varsity football team this fall, according to this report by Fred Robledo of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune (like the Daily Pilot in the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area, the SGVN does a nice job covering high school sports in its geographical frame).

The reason? No head coach and no practices since early June.

Players’ parents are beginning to fret and if the fretting leads to transferring, then football at Blair could be finished. The team plays its 2012 season opener on Aug. 24.

Blair has a pretty good football history. In 1969, Blair had one of the all-time great running back tandems in California history — Kermit Johnson and James McAlister, who later went on to star at UCLA. Those guys were called “The Blair Pair.” Coached by Pete Yoder, who later would coach at Esperanza, Blair’s Vikings won the CIF-Southern Section major-division championship in ’69 with a victory over Bishop Amat in the championship game at the Coliseum.

Last year, Blair was 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the Rio Hondo League (Monrovia was the league’s champion, and also was CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division champion).

Football recruiting: MV’s Pinner signs with USC, his ‘first and only choice’

February 1st, 2012, 3:55 pm by

Mission Viejo fullback Jahleel Pinner took the podium on Wednesday and promptly thanked his father, mother, grandmother, head coach and position coach, before closing his short speech with a special thanks to teammate Colby Cyburt for choosing UCLA.

“It’ll make me work that much harder,” said a smiling Pinner, bringing 24 student athletes and their parents to a chuckle during the Diablos’ signing day ceremony at Mission Viejo High.

Pinner officially signed a national letter of intent to USC on Wednesday but has had the Trojans written on his heart since he committed last May.

“USC was my first choice and my only choice,” Pinner said. “I was 110 percent. I’m excited. I’ve been ready to get this out of the way.”

The feeling might be mutual for USC, which landed the nation’s No. 1 ranked fullback by Rivals.com and Scout.com. Pinner is a versatile back at 6-0, 230 pounds, noted for his blocking, power, hands and selflessness. After mostly serving as a blocker his first year on varsity, Pinner had 102 touches as a senior and six touchdowns, including four as a receiver.

“That’s what they like about me, the way I take angles on my blocks, and my hands out of the backfield,” Pinner said. “When I go up there and they talk to me about my position, Stanley Havili, they always tell me I’m going to be that type of back.

“As long as I’m on the field I don’t really care.”

Why Mission Viejo OL Colby Cyburt picked UCLA

February 1st, 2012, 2:14 pm by

How persuasive was new UCLA coach Jim Mora? Mission Viejo offensive lineman Colby Cyburt forgot all about the Bruins’ turbulent season, cancelled an official visit to Stanford and wouldn’t take calls from USC.

Cyburt said Mora called him the week he was hired. And again the following week. and the week after that. And every week since.

“He doesn’t let up until he gets what he wants,” Cyburt said Wednesday at Mission Viejo High, where the Diablos had nine football players and 24 student athletes sign their national letters of intent. “He has the drive and determination that you need as a head coach. He’s so hands on. I haven’t talked to a head coach more than Jim Mora.”

Cyburt (6-5, 265), an All-County left tackle and 3-star prospect ranked among the top-50 linemen in the nation, said two of his priorities were academics and staying relatively close to home. His decision ultimately came down to Stanford and UCLA, which he watched closely as the Bruins recorded the NCAA’s first ever 6-8 season and fired Rick Neuheisel.
