Swim: Mission Viejo’s Heron heading to SEC

Mission Viejo High and Mission Viejo Nadadores standout distance swimmer David Heron has committed to Tennessee, the senior confirmed.

Heron, who finished fourth in the 500-yard free (4:30.59) at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals in May, made Tennessee his only official recruiting trip.

At Tennessee, he will be reunited with his former Nadadores coach, Tyler Fenwick, now an associate coach for the Vols. Heron captured the 5k U.S. open water national title in April, swam at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials and also claimed the 10K at the U.S. Junior Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Swim: Nadadores distance coach departing for college gig

Mission Viejo Nadadores assistant Tyler Fenwick, a rising coaching star who trains some of Orange County’s top high-school age distance swimmers, has accepted an associate coaching post at the University of Tennessee, he said in an e-mail.

Fenwick, pictured far left, aws previously a graduate assistant at Tennessee. He will start coaching with the Vols after the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials.

With the Nadadores, he has worked with county swimmers such as Janardan Burns of Aliso Niguel and David Heron of Mission Viejo.

Swim: Mission Viejo Nadadores’ Burns, Heron make national team (update)

The Mission Viejo Nadadores delivered an impressive showing at the open water national championships Friday in Florida.

Ashley Twichell of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, pictured left, captured the women’s 10K open water national championship to keep her hopes of qualifying for this summer’s Olympics alive.

Twichell finished in 2 hours, three minutes and 6.03 seconds to advance to the Olympic Qualifier Event in Portugal on June 9.

The Nadadores’ Janardan Burns (Aliso Niguel) and David Heron (Mission Viejo) — both high school juniors — finished second and third, respectively, behind male winner Andrew Gemmell.

Burns and Heron both made the U.S. national team with their finishes.
