‘Athletically motivated’ lingo stays in transfer rules

October 30th, 2012, 11:56 am by

At Monday’ CIF State Federated Council meeting, where all state-wide CIF rules are adopted or amended, the Trinity League proposal that would delete “athletically motivated” language from transfer rules did not pass. Thus, a transfer that is determined to be athletically motivated in whole or in part could cause a student-athlete’s eligibility to be denied at his or her new school.

The CIF-Southern Section has lessened its emphasis onĀ  that athletically motivated angle in recent months — as it should. Every transfer could be looked upon to be athletically motivated, even a little bit. Let the kids play!

Also, a proposal to change the structure of the CIF State Championship Bowl Games did not pass, so the selection process and number of teams selected will be unchanged. The Regionals Round of the state football playoffs is in place this year and next year as a two-year pilot program.

“Athletically Motivated Transfers”

October 25th, 2012, 9:34 am by

The CIF-Southern Section Council, the section’s rules-making rules-changing body, voted this morning to support a CIF State proposal that would eliminate the “athletically motivated” language from rules regarding transfers.

The Southern Section is one of 10 sections in the state that will meet later to vote on this proposal. It might be that a majority of the state’s other sections will vote against the proposal.

Currently, a student-athlete who transfers could have his athletic eligibility denied at his or her new school if the transfer appears to be athletically motivated.

The state proposal was created by the Trinity League. Trinity League schools are JSerra, Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Servite, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

The section council, made up of representatives of CIF-SS leagues, voted to support the measure, 45-27.

Football: All-Sunset OL transfering to Mater Dei

May 16th, 2012, 4:33 pm by

Sam Bush, All-Sunset League second team last year as a sophomore at Newport Harbor, will transfer to Mater Dei, his father Blaine Bush confirmed via email.

Blaine Bush said the move of the Sunset League, and Newport Harbor, from the Pac-5 Division to the Southwest Division for the football playoffs was the chief reason for the move. Mr. Bush said it is his son’s desire to play against the best competition possible, and is no reflection upon Newport Harbor or its coach Jeff Brinkley of whom Mr. Bush spoke highly.

Sam Bush was listed as 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds on the 2011 Newport Harbor roster. His father said Sam will transfer when Sam’s spring semester ends at Newport Harbor. Sam will attend a football camp at Notre Dame this summer.
