El Toro’s top-ranked boys water polo team on Saturday night lost for the first time, falling to Miramonte of Orinda, 9-5, in the finals of the North-South Challenge in Atherton.
The match not only pitted the top-seeded teams from Southern and Northern California, each side was undefeated.
But the dream match didn’t exactly live up to the hype. Miramonte led 4-0 early and took a 7-3 lead into the fourth period. The Mats are the best team in the state – hands down.
State supremacy will certainly be on the line later this afternoon as Southern California power El Toro takes in Northern California heavyweight Miramonte at 4:10 p.m. in a battle of undefeated teams in the final of the North-South Challenge in Atherton.
Yep, two undefeated squads are hooking up late October – that’s pretty rare for this sport.
Orange County’s top-ranked water polo team, El Toro, and No. 2 Los Alamitos will play the top-two teams from Northern California later this morning in the semifinals of the North-South Challenge in Atherton.
El Toro takes on tournament host Sacred Heart Prep at 10:20 a.m. Los Alamitos plays Miramonte of Orinda at 11:30 a.m. The championship is at 4:10 p.m.
Already this morning, Mater Dei reached the fifth-place match by avenging an early-season loss to Santa Barbara. The Monarchs could face Division II rival Villa Park. How about that for a fifth-place match?
