Softball: Marina beats Los Al in Sunset opener

April 9th, 2013, 5:30 pm by

Los Al is down to its 6, 7 and 8 hitters in the top of the seventh.

Marina 2B Alyssa Sojka makes a fine play on a grounder in the hole to get Kate Prior. One down.

Marina ace Tera Blanco strikes out Kaylee Ellebracht. Two down.

Blanco gets Mackenzie Kutzke on a calle dthird strike to end the game.

Blanco goes the distance, allowing three hits, one walk, one hit batter, no earned runs and striking out 10 to secure the victory.

No. 7 Marina beats No. 10 Los Alamitos, 2-1, in the Sunset League opener for both teams on Tuesday at Marina High.

Softball: Geer makes things happen

April 9th, 2013, 5:17 pm by

Los Al coach Rob Weil just told me it was a balk in the previous inning.

“Once you start your motion, you can’t stop,” Weil says.

Tennessee-bound Megan Geer hits a high chopper to short to lead off the top of the sixth. Marina SS Sydney McCollum does her best to charge and make a play, but she can’t come up with it. I’m scoring it a single for Geer.

Some players wait for things to happen, but Megan Geer is the kind of player that makes things happen. She steals second with two outs. Then she steals third. The catcher overthrows third and she scores on the play. Los Al cuts it to 2-1.

Blanco strikes out Mattie Scheele to end the inning.

Emili Olague picks up a one-out single for Marina.

Desiree Hagberg lines one at Geer and Geer misplays it. E-4. Geer? It happens to the best of them.

I, I, I!!! is blasting, so that means Bella Secaira is stepping to the plate for Marina with runner son first and second. Here comes a full count pitch to Bella and she flies out to center field.

The runner on second tags and takes third. The Vikings strand the runners at first and third.

Marina 2, Los Al 1 after 6 innings.

Softball: No boy bands on Hagberg’s watch

April 9th, 2013, 4:47 pm by

My man Donnie Hagberg, the father of Marina center fielder Desiree Hagberg, is handling the announcing duties and running the music between innings, so you know that means? That means only Metallica, Guns n’ Roses, Ozzy, Van Halen and NO Bieber.

Marina ace Tera Blanco with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Griffins in the top of the fifth.

Don’t forget tonight is “The Ultimate Fighter 17″ semifinals at 9 p.m. on FX. Team Sonnen’s Uriah Hall vs. Team Jones’ Dylan Andrews and Team Sonnen’s Kelvin Gastellum vs. Team Jones’ Josh Samman. This has been the best TUF season in a long time.

Bella Secaira picks up a one-out single through the 6 hole for the Vikings.

Alyssa Sojka follows with a single to left and the Vikings have runner son first and second with one out for the top of the order.

Los Al’s sophomore pitcher Katie Neary gets sophomore Sydney McCollum to pop out. Two down.

A ball in the dirt moves the runners to second and third. UNLV-bound Sam Agamaite is pulling a bunch of pitches foul. She’s making hard contact. Neary walks her and … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!!

Blanco, the most dangerous hitter for Marina, steps to the plate. Neary is coming inside on Blanco, who pulls a line drive foul. Blanco mashes another one foul. BALK!!! WHAT? It looked like Blanco was about to call time, so Neary stopped in mid-motion, The plate umpire calls it a balk and that forces in a run.

Neary is clearly rattled and she goes down 3-0 on Sydnee Cable. Neary battles back to get Cable on a fly out.

Marina 2, Los Al 0 0 after 5 innings.

Softball: Marina and Los Al have ‘enthusiasms’

April 9th, 2013, 4:21 pm by

I don’t know which dugout has more fun, Los Al or Marina? I do know both teams have what Al Capone in “The Untouchables” called “enthusiasms.”

Rachel Sellers leads off the top of the fourth with a single. Courtesy runner Nicole Denehy steals second.

Marina ace Tera Blanco strikes out Alex Finnie. One down.

Mattie Scheele send one to shallow right field … Marina RF Keala Cordeiro with a great diving effort on the play. Is she out out or is that single. Field ump says … it’s a hit.

Scheele steals second and Los Al has runners on second and third.

Kate Prior hits a grounder to short and SS Sydney McCollum guns down Denehy at the plate. Two down.

Blanco gets Kaylee Ellebracht to ground out to end the inning.

Blanco leads off the bottom of the fourth and she mashes one foul that landed somewhere near Edinger Blvd. Blanco ends up walking. Nothing doing for the Vikings.

Marina 1, Los Al 0 after 4 innings.

Softball: Griffins threatening

April 9th, 2013, 4:04 pm by

OUCH!!! Marina ace Tera Blanco just HBP’d Mackenzie Kutzke to start the top of the third.

I think Jenna Holcumb is a freshman because Los Al bench breaks into, “Come on, freshman, we love our freshman” chant. I just checked the roster and it turns out Holcomb is a frosh. Holcumb gets down the sacrifice to move the runner to second and now I know Los Al loves their freshman.

Top of the order coming up for the Griffins.

Blamco bears down and strikes out Erika Crissman. Two down.

Tennessee-bound Megan Geer steps to the plate. Titanic showdown coming up. If anyone can hit a line drive through  this wind and out of here, it’s Geer. The Marina baseball team is behind home plate to support the softball teams. Here comes the 3-2 pitch … struck her out on a called third strike. Blanco has six Ks through three innings.

Los Al ace Katie Neary with second consecutive 1-2-3 inning to retire the Vikings.

Marina 1, Los Al 0 after 3 innings.

Softball: Take a ride on the Crazy Train!

April 9th, 2013, 3:48 pm by

Michigan-commit Tera Blanco is bringing some heat today. Blanco’s got her changeup working too. Nasty stuff.

Blanco channels her inner Viking and strikes out the side to retire Los Al in the top of the second.

Marina catcher Bella Secaira’s walk-out song is Ozzy Osboune’s “Crazy Train.” The power of Ozzy can’t stop Los Al’s Katie Neary from striking out Bella to end the inning.

Marina 1, Los Al 0 after 2 innings.

Softball: If ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Sons of Anarchy’ had a baby …

April 9th, 2013, 3:45 pm by

Los Al and its mighty offense is up in the top of the first. How will the Griffins do against Marina ace Tera Blanco, arguably one of the top pitchers in So Cal?

Blanco walks Erika Crissman and she steals second base.

After a long battle with Tennessee-bound Megan Geer, Blanco gets her tyo line out to third. One down.

Blanco strikes out Rachel Sellers. Two down.

Crissman takes off and steals third.

Alex Finnie hits one deep to center field, but the wind knocks it down and keeps it on the reservation.

The Vikings are coming up in the bottom of the first. Speaking of Vikings, has anbody been catching “Vikngs” on Sunday nights on History Channel. If “Sons of Anarchy” and “Game of Thrones” had a baby, it would be this crazy badass show “Vikings.”

Sophomore Katie Neary is starting in the circle for the Griffins.

She gives up a lead-off walk to Sydney McCollum and Sam Agamaite executes a perfect sacrifice to move her to second.

Blanco steps up to the plate for Marina and the Vikings bench breaks into a Tera Blanco song.

Blanco lines a single to the opposite field in right. McCollum is going all the way from second. RF Mackenzie Kutzke’s throw is on target, but Los Al catcher Rachel Sellers doesn’t get the tag down right away and McCollum slides under to give Marina a 1-0 lead.

Sydnee Cable gets her own song from the bench when she steps up to the plate.

My theme song is “I’m shipping up to Boston” by the Dropkick Murphys.

Sydnee Cable is on after a fielder’s choice. The Griffins get the lead runner at second. Two down. Cable takes second a passed ball.

Keala Cordeiro flies out to center.

Marina 1, Los Al 0 after 1 inning.

Softball: Live from Marina High

April 9th, 2013, 3:03 pm by

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Marina High for the Sunset League opener between No. 10 Los Alamitos (12-9, 0-0) and No. 7 Marina (13-2, 0-0).

Marina is coming off a 2-0 loss to El Modena in the quarterfinals of the Woodbridge Tournament on Monday night at Barber Park.

Los Al finished fourth in the Michelle Carew Classic last week at Peralta Park. The Griffins outslugged Poway, Woodcreek of Roseville and El Toro before losing to Yorba Linda and Orange Lutheran on Saturday.

The Griffins were left with a very young and inexperienced pitching staff after Alex and Andie Formby transferred to Mater Dei. But Los Al boasts one of the best offensive lineups in the county led by Tennessee-bound Megan Geer, Pacific-commit Rachel Sellers, Indiana State-bound Erika Crissman, LMU-bound Alex Finnie. So Los Al’s game plan this season is to outscore everyone it faces.

Marina is led by Michigan-commit Tera Blanco, who is pitching at the top of her game this season after pitching with a nagging back injury throughout her sophomore season. Utah-bound catcher Bella Secaira has been strong leader for the Vikings this season Blanco and Secaira are teammates on the Firecrackers. UNLV-bound 3B Sam Agamaite and sophomore SS Sydney McCollum have also been bright spots for the Vikings.

Los Al swept the season series from Marina, 6-5 and 9-4, last season. I’m sure Marina will be looking for some payback.

Stay tuned for all the updates. First pitch is 3:15 p.m.
