Coaching change at Newport Harbor

Larry Hirst has resigned as basketball coach at Newport Harbor to take a personal leave of absence, Hirst confirmed today.  Hirst has coached at Newport Harbor for several seasons.

Bob Torribio, who has been a Newport Harbor assistant coach, has replaced Hirst. Torribio replaced Hirst twice before in recent years, first when Hirst took a break to create more family time and last season when Hirst encountered health issues related to dehydration and fatigue.

Newport is 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the Sunset League.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 7 (updated)

7. Edison
(13-1 overall, 5-0 in the Sunset League last year)

(Editor’s note: The preview has been updated with the news that QB Chase Favreau has been ruled ineligible.) 

It was a great 2009 for the Chargers. They went Mater Dei and Servite in nonleague games, then went undefeated in the Sunset League to take the league title, and got all the way to the Pac-5 championship game in which they lost a close game to Servite.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 8

8. Newport Harbor
(6-5 overall, 3-2 in the Sunset League last year)

First, the bad news. Cedric Whitaker, a running back who transferred to Newport Harbor form Oakland last September, moved back to Oakland during the summer and had not returned to Harbor as of the second week of fall practice. He rushed for 967 yards and eight touchdowns last season as a junior.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 17

17. Fountain Valley
(8-3 overall, 3-2 in the Sunset League last year)

The Barons last season won eight games, their most since winning that many in 2003 and only the second time they won that many since 1993. Many of the big reasons they had such a fine 2009 are gone, with Sunset co-ofensvie back of the year Kyle Middlebrooks, quarterback Dominic Ragland and four other all-league players having graduated. There are some good ones returning, like all-league lineman Courtland Drummond and Brandon Moss.

Baseball: Esperanza rallies to beat Edison, Owens

The Sunset League baseball race just got a lot more interesting.

Esperanza, ranked sixth in the county, rallied in the sixth inning against Edison’s ace, Henry Owens, to score three runs on two home runs and pull out a 3-1 victory over the No. 2 Chargers this afternoon at Edison High.
