Boys water polo: Santa Margarita caps sizzling October with tournament title

Santa Margarita’s boys water polo team had a good excuse for being late to their school homecoming dance Saturday night.

The Eagles claimed their first tourney title in more than a decade.

Stephen Riggins, left, led eight players in scoring with three goals and goalie Ryan Melosini made a save with about four seconds left as the Eagles (20-9) captured the Steve Pal Memorial Tournament title with an 11-10 victory against visiting No. 7 Dana Hills.

Santa Margarita improved to 11-1 in October. The only loss was against undefeated Mater Dei.

Boys water polo: Dana Hills takes fourth at Steve Pal Memorial

Ventura opened the fourth period with a 4-0 run and went on to defeat Dana Hills’  No. 9-ranked boys water polo team, 7-4, in the third-place match between Division 1 schools at the inaugural Steve Pal Memorial Tournament at Northwood on Saturday.

In the championship match, Division 4 contender Righetti of Santa Maria edged Division 3 contender Damien of La Verne,  9-8, at Northwood.

Boys water polo: Villa Park dedicating new tournament to late official

A new 32-team boys water polo tournament will debut this coming fall and will be called the Steve Pal Memorial in memory of the late water polo official.

The tournament is being organized by Villa Park consultant John Kulisich and will be held Monday Oct. 24, Friday Oct. 28 and Saturday Oct. 29. The Spartans will not be part of the field but Kulisich has commitments so far from several teams, including:
