Frankly Fryer: Game of the week

October 13th, 2010, 6:18 pm by

TRINITY LEAGUE

NO. 4 SANTA MARGARITA (4-1) VS. ORANGE LUTHERAN (3-2)

Where, when: Orange Coast College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Maybe the surprise team of 2010 so far is Santa Margarita. The Eagles lost to JSerra last year, brought in a new coach, and certainly some improvement could be expected given Coach Harry Welch’s collection of eight CIF-Southern Section titles. Santa Margarita has surpassed expectations.

Fryer’s top 10 vote

October 11th, 2010, 10:05 am by

Mission Viejo was very impressive Friday, in the Diablos’ 42-14 victory over Redlands East Valley. Breaking it down, Servite-Mission Viejo, as I did in the late-night Friday/early Saturday Fryer online column, Mission has the better offense, Servite the better defense and the tiebreaker, then, is Servite’s kicking game led by Connor Loftus.

Again, anybody voting Mission Viejo at No. 1 has good reasons to do so. And if anybody thinks Servite is No. 1 on my ballot because of “Servite favoritism” … well, the team that is No. 2 gets that “we’ll show ‘em who’s really No. 1!” motivation.  So I’m really helping Mission here (if Mission actually cares about my feeble opinions, that is … )

My top 10 this week …

GAME OF THE WEEK

REDLANDS EAST VALLEY (3-1) vs. NO. 2 MISSION VIEJO (5-0)

Where, when: Mission Viejo High, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: A lot has been said and written, and rightfully so, about the challenging nonleague schedule of Servite. Mission Viejo lined up some good opponents on its nonleague itinerary, too. The Diablos have played Bothell of Washington in Washing, Loyola of Los Angeles, Corona, Long Beach Poly and Carson. Those teams are a cumulative 14-9.

October 6th, 2010, 5:34 pm by

CAPISTRANO VALLEY (3-2) VS. DANA HILLS (2-3)

Outlook: Dana Hills was knocked out of the county Top 10 after last week’s 23-14 upset loss to El Toro, the Dolphins’ third consecutive loss. They need a victory to get some momentum back before they open South Coast League play next week – against Mission Viejo.

He rushed for 115 yards and had 220 receiving yards, and three touchdown receptions, last week in the Stallions’ 45-16 victory over University.  He has led San Juan Hills to a great start, but take a look at this – the cumulative record of the Stallions’ opponents is 6-17.

GODINEZ (3-1) VS. SEGERSTROM (3-1)

Where, when: Segerstrom High, Friday, 7 p.m.
