Football: Jakubiec no longer at Servite

November 5th, 2009, 1:45 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_iconMatt Jakubiec, a 6-7, 320-pound offensive lineman who is among the nation's top prospects at his position, has withdrawn from Servite, Servite coach Troy Thomas confirmed.

As usual in these situations, the coach could not specify reasons for Jakubiec's departure.

Football: Pumpkin vs. Scoreboard, Part II

November 3rd, 2009, 2:56 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_iconOne pumpkin blasted through the Pepsi ad on the Titan Stadium scoreboard at Cal State Fullerton. Another flew over it. The scoreboard is OK and ready to go for the Fountain Valley-Edison game there this Friday, according to CSUF associate athletic director Rob Shildone.

And the reason there will be an $8 parking fee for the football game and there was free parking for the pumpkin launch on Halloween -- the pumpkin launch was a CSUF event, Shildone explained.

Pumpkin 1, Titan Stadium 0

November 3rd, 2009, 1:42 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_iconI am trying to get the answer to two questions from Cal State Fullerton folks:

1. What sort of damage was done to the scoreboard there on Halloween, when there was a pumpkin launching contest? One pumpkin smashed through the scoreboard.

2. Parking was free for this event, we reported. But there will be an $8 charge for parking for Fountain Valley-Edison football there Friday. Why?

Getting that to you as soon as I find out ...

(BTW -- Nothing against pumpkin launching as a science class project. Lots more fruitful than slicing apart dead frogs.)

Football: Another coin flip coming up in the Sunset?

November 3rd, 2009, 1:13 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blogLast year, there was a five-way tie for first with these teams at 3-2: Edison; Esperanza; Fountain Valley; Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor.

A series of coin flips took Edison and Newport Harbor out of the playoffs (and Newport Harbor had won its final three games, including victories over Esperanza and Los Alamitos, both of which made the playoffs via those coin flips).

Football: Fryer's Top 10 vote

November 2nd, 2009, 12:35 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blogAnd there is no way this week's Top 10 vote can be controversial.

Right?

Here is how I voted in the O.C. media poll this week:

1. Edison (10-0). Very well-rounded, practically flawless.

Football: Servite's Taula has broken arm

October 31st, 2009, 1:23 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6Servite lineman Kirifi Taula, one of the top defensive players in the counter, suffered a broken left arm in practice earlier this week and could be out up to four weeks.

Offensive lineman Matt Jakubiec, a top prospect who broke a knee cap in August, was expected to be able to play for Servite by the time of the St. John Bosco game two weeks ago, still has not played.

Football: Great news on Mission Viejo's Staszak

October 31st, 2009, 1:16 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6Mission Viejo football  defensive back Jake Staszak, taken to Mission Hospital on Friday, night suffered a cracked vertebrae in the middle of his back from a collision with Aliso Niguel player Anthony Robinson last nigh, Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson said today.

Staszak remained in the hospital overnight, but could be released later today, Johnson said.

The coach said Staszak had no headache this morning and the cracked vertebrae is expected to heal with no complications.

Robinson was hurt, too, on the play just 1:16 into the game but was able to walk off the field.

Staszak remained on the field and was administered to by Mission Viejo longtime team doctor Mark Legome and team trainer Jo Schafhausen. Johnson praised Lebome and Schafhausen for the quick work. Paramedics arrived, and took Staszak to Mission Hospital.

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in OC, won, 70-7. Johnson said it was difficult to concentrate on the game the rest of the evening because of the players' injuries.

"That just put a cloud over whole night," he said. "It was very scary."

football_blog6I spoke today with Edison athletic director Bruce Belcher and Fountain Valley principal Chris Herfeld today. Here is the latest on the possibility of moving the game (Nov. 6 at Orange Coast College, capacity 7,600) to a larger venue, given how quickly the game sold out  ...

Tex Wallis, 1926-2009

October 28th, 2009, 12:25 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Tex Wallis, whose 656 career coaching victories at La Habra is the second-highest total in Orange County history, passed away Tuesday night. He was 83.

Wallis was not only a great coach, but a great person. He was extremely kind to me, as a young guy covering sports for the old Brea-La Habra Daily Star-Progress in the late 1970s.

Services are private. There will be a memorial service in the La Habra gym on Nov. 7, time to be announced. There is a picture of Wallis hanging in that gym.

The latest on Fountain Valley-Edison tickets

October 28th, 2009, 10:44 am by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6Parents at both schools are very angry that tickets were all sold, they tell me, before students got a chance to purchase them. This is always a huge game, but is more so this year because both teams are in the top 10 and both are going into this week with 7-0 records. The game is Nov. 6 at Orange Coast College (seating capacity is 7,600 there).  It is Edison's home game.

I have calls in, and left messages, to both schools' principals to find out what actually happened with the ticket sales.

Craigslist has listings of FV-Edison tickets -- $40-$55. That's a lot of money for a high school football game (I saw Led Zeppelin for $9).

For the huge Servite-Mater Dei last week, at Santa Stadium (capacity 10,000) both schools had a very intricate, well-thought-out method for distributing tickets. That method will be in the Fryer column, online Thursday afternoon at ocvarsity.com and in the print OC Register on Friday.

Come back for updates on this situation.

Football: Fountain Valley-Edison sold out

October 27th, 2009, 3:41 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6All the tickets are gone for the game, which is Nov. 6 at Orange Coast College.

No, they won't move it to a bigger stadium. (The capacity at OCC is 7,600). Cerritos College is taken (OLu-Servite). Cal State Fullerton is cost-prohibitive, and Angel Stadium, to play a high school game in that place, requires weeks of preparation.

Remember, the Angels were eliminated just a couple of days ago.

You will be able to keep up with the game, of course, with ocvarsity.com's live updates. There may be live video, too, from our friends at IBN Sports.
