On De La Salle's final drive of its Division I football bowl game against Centennial Corona on Friday night, the Spartans trailed, 21-14, with about three minutes left when they faced a second-and-short at about the Huskies' 35. So what does the juggernaut from Concord do?

They Spartans try to get tricky.

They opt for play-action and their QB slips down for about a 5 yard loss. Next thing you know, that down and distances is much harder and a promising and potential game-tying drive stalls.

DLS should have run the ball on second-and-short. A QB sneak would have been fine or its best play for a back. The Spartans were in four-down territory, and I think they could have run for the first down on a second, third or fourth and short. Centennial's defense actually looked a little worn down.

A do-able conversion for a first down was in sight but De La Salle outsmarted itself and made bthe challenge harder than it needed to be. Centennial held on for a 21-16 victory at The Home Depot Center.

Nice night for the Southern Section. Huskies and Tartans both won. Corona coach Matt Logan also is a former assistant in the county.
