This is one of the most stunning turnarounds I have ever seen. In fact, I can't believe St. Margaret's ended up winning by such a big margin.

That's 50 wins in a row too.

Outlook: St. Margaret's is going after its second consecutive CIF championship and has been the division's top ranked team since the start of the year. The Tartans haven't lost a match in two seasons. Rowland upset No. 4 Cerritos on the road last round, and gets the benefit of returning home against the Tartans. However, it still might not be enough to overcome St. Margaret's depth in both singles and doubles.

There's four matches to win before that happens, and we'll watch to see if anybody can get in their way.

Defending Champion: St. Margaret's. Tartans defeated Sage Hill, 10-8, last year in thrilling fashion. St. Margaret's won the final doulbes set in a tiebreaker to pull out the victory.

However, there's another Tartans winning streak that's still going. The girls tennis team closed out a perfect 10-0 Academy League schedule last week to push their consecutive match streak to 45.

St. Margaret's, ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Division IV coaches' poll, is the defending CIF champion, with their last loss coming in the CIF semifinals in 2007.

The Tartans posted a 25-0 record during the title run last season, and are currently 20-0 this season heading into next week's playoff.

There was a scare to the streak this season in a match against Sage Hill, which is ranked No. 2 in Division IV. St. Margaret's pulled out a victory on games, 59-57, on Oct. 13. The Tartans defeated Sage, 12-6, in the next meeting.

It's possible the team's meet for a third time in the CIF final, which would be a rematch of last year's championship match. If that's the case, St. Margaret's would be going for win No. 50 in a row.

As a freshman he didn’t win a single game during any match. As a senior, his team can’t lose.

The 6-foot-6 outside hitter helped St. Margaret’s reach its first CIF-SS championship match since 2003 by sweeping Flintridge Prep 25-15, 25-13, 25-23 in the Division V semifinals Wednesday at St. Margaret’s High.

The Tartans (17-3) enter Saturday’s final on a 17-game winning streak. They will face Salesian, which swept Sage Hill 25-16, 25-16, 25-23

St. Margaret’s last won the title in 2001. Flintridge Prep finishes the season 20-6.

“We have unbelievably high expectations for no less than their best,” Tartans coach Jeremy Dailey said. “Their effort is never in doubt. We are proud of these guys. We are going to try to improve everyday and get a little better before Saturday.”

Flintridge Prep became the latest team to feel the Tartans overall improvement from Frost’s freshman season through last year when St. Margaret’s lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champ Viewpoint. Frost said the team used that loss as motivation for this season.

The team’s goal was to go undefeated in league and go after the CIF title. The checked the former off their list earlier this month, and can add the final check with one more victory.

“We didn’t want to have another sour taste in our mouth,” Frost said.

Frost took the lead in the semis, finishing with a team-high 11 kills. He was part of hitting trio that gave the Rebels defense fits. Woody Quinn finished with 9 kills and Kristian Kiraly added 7 kills. Kory Kiraly had 37 assists.

“We have a really balanced attack,” Frost said. “We have a person who can put the ball away on any play.”

St. Margaret’s still hasn’t lost a game in the playoffs. The Tartans built a 20-11 lead in the opening game and looked like they would run away with the match.

However, Flintridge Prep found its rhythm in Game 3 and was tied at 21. Quinn responded with a kill off the block and a flubbed set gave the Tartans a 23-21 lead. Nick Adams’ kill gave St. Margaret’s match point, and a Rebels net violation ended the match.

It marked the second consecutive match the Tartans were pushed in Game 3. They beat Cantwell Sacred Heart 29-27 in the quarterfinals to close out that match.

“We’ve been challenged and still have come out on top,” Frost said.

Outlook: St. Margaret's a victory away from reaching the championship match, and the school is clearly the favorite in this one. The Tartans have home court advantage, and still haven't dropped a game in the playoffs. Flintridge Prep lost twice in league play to Chadwick, a team St. Margaret's swept once during nonleague play.

Outlook

St. Margaret's-Cantwell Sacred Heart

The two teams haven't met this season but share one common opponent - Vistamar. The Tartans beat them once while Cantwell lost to them twice. That can be a telling sign for St. Margaret's. However, going on the road in the playoffs is not easy.

Sage Hill-Chadwick

The Lightning lost to the Dolphins in five games back on March 10. That was a long time ago. Chadwick finished first in the Prep League. The Lightning finished behind St. Margaret's in the Academy. The Tartans swept Chadwick earlier this season. We'll see whether Sage Hill or Chadwick has improved more since their first meeting. That was a road game for the Lightning.
