Sage Hill started the week No. 1 in the division, followed by St. Margaret’s at No. 2.

Next week, that should change.

After alternating victories through the first four sets, the Tartans (14-4, 2-0) sealed the victory by taking the fifth, 15-11.

Boys lacrosse: Hutnick named new coach at San Clemente

September 19th, 2012, 1:34 pm by

Mike Hutnick has been named new boys lacrosse coach at San Clemente, athletic director Jon Hamro said in a release on Tuesday.

Hutnick, a former head coach at JSerra, replaces Glen Miles, who has taken over the head coaching job at St. Margaret’s.

JSerra won a share of the Trinity League title under Hutnick in 2009. Hutnick, who most recently has been an assistant at JSerra,  played lacrosse at Southern New Hampshire University.

“I am thrilled that we were able to attract such a high caliber lacrosse coach in Mike Hutnick,”  Hamro said. “Mike takes over a Triton boys’ lacrosse program that has been very successful and he fully understands what it will take to not only continue that success, but also elevate it as well.  Mike understands that success on the lacrosse field is built upon high academic expectations and character building and that hard work, commitment, dedication, and integrity are the cornerstones.”

Baseball playoffs: Trabuco at home for semifinals; Mater Dei at 7 p.m.

May 26th, 2012, 10:19 am by

UPDATED: Trabuco Hills won the coin flip that made the Mustangs the home team for their Division 2 semifinal game against Aliso Niguel.

And, to the surprise of nobody — right? — Mater Dei vs. Newbury Park was selected to be the 7 p.m. game in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 semifinals Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Because Aliso and Trabuco have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip was needed to decide the home team for their Division 2 semifinal Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Aliso Niguel beat Trabuco, two out of three, in their three-game series in the Sea View League.

The Division 1 baseball semifinals for years have been played as a doubleheader at Blair. The 4 p.m. game is the other D1 semi, West Ranch of Valencia vs. Corona. In the quarterfinals Friday, West Ranch beat top-seeded Orange Lutheran and Corona defeated El Dorado.

Given that Mater Dei is so good at attracting a large audience, no matter the sport, it makes financial sense for CIF-SS to place Mater Dei in the late slot.

Tickets for the semifinals doubleheader are $6 for adults and $4 for students with valid student identification and for people 13 and younger. Parking is free, yet sparse, at Blair Field.

In other semifinals Tuesday, all at 3:15 p.m., Beckman is at Alhambra in Division 3, and Capistrano Valley Christian plays St. Margaret’s at San Juan Sports Park in Division 6.

Baseball: Aliso, Mater Dei win coin flips

May 23rd, 2012, 10:44 am by

Aliso Niguel and Mater Dei this morning won coin flips that determined home teams for Friday’s quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Mater Dei will be at home Friday against Esperanza in a Division 1 quarterfinal. Aliso plays host to Valencia in a Division 2 quarterfinal. Valencia scored the biggest upset of the playoffs so far, with its 3-1 victory Tuesday over top-seeded Harvard Westlake, which this week is ranked No. 12 in the nation.

All games are at 3:15 p.m. There could be time changes, for which both teams would have to agree upon and the CIF-SS office would have to approve. If we get time changes, we will post them here.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

For example, in Division 1 Orange Lutheran has played two playoff home games and its quarterfinals opponent, West Ranch of Valencia, has played one. So West Ranch is the home team. Mater Dei and Esperanza both have played one home and one away playoff game, so a coin flip was needed there.

Other county teams that lost coin flips today: El Dorado (Division 1); Oxford Academy (Division 6); and St. Margaret’s (Division 6). In Division 6, Capistrano Valley Christian won its coin flip.

Updated brackets are here at ocvarsity.com.

Longtime Santa Margarita assistant hired at St. Margaret’s

May 7th, 2012, 1:05 pm by

Brian Carmer, assistant coach at Santa Margarita for 14 seasons, has been hired as head coach at St. Margaret’s.

Carmer was an assistant to Jerry DeBusk at Santa Margarita, and DeBusk was pulling for Carmer to replace him after DeBusk announced he is retiring at Santa Margarita. Santa Margarita hired Jeff Reinert, who has 24 years of college coaching experience.

At St. Margaret’s Carmer replaces Billy Assaf, who resigned to create more time for family.

Fryer on the firing of two Santa Margarita assistant football coaches

January 6th, 2012, 9:20 am by

I was out of the USA from Dec. 26-Jan. 5, so I am getting caught up on a few things.

While I was south of the equator, enjoying the famous and fabulous New Year’s fireworks display at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, a semi-explosive development occurred at Santa Margarita.

First, Santa Margarita administration sent a letter to the school’s parents stating that Santa Margarita football coaches Sean Coen and Robert Hendricks remained in good standing at the school, a letter that it had to create after OCVarsity.com/The Register published that Coen and Hendricks had continued to serve as varsity assistant coaches for the school’s CIF section and state championship football team following misdemeanor convictions in September for marijuana possession.

St. Margaret’s assistant coach fired after additional drug charge surfaces

December 30th, 2011, 3:53 pm by

St. Margaret’s fired assistant football coach Charles Spann shortly after the season after being informed of his second drug-related case, the school said in a statement Friday.

Spann, 25, of Orange, was charged with possession of a controlled substance — vicodin — and for having a fake driver’s license from an Aug. 22 incident in San Juan Capistrano, according to court records.

St. Margaret’s said Friday that it was informed Dec. 2 of Spann’s arrest from the district attorney’s office and fired the coach Dec. 5.

The school said it was notified in late September about Spann’s first drug-related case, which involved two Santa Margarita assistant coaches who were fired Thursday.

In that case, Spann pleaded guilty to marijuana possession from an incident in December 2010, but St. Margaret’s stated it allowed him to keep his coaching position after “careful thought and consideration.”

Girls Tennis: CIF-SS Division 3 finals preview

November 20th, 2011, 6:32 pm by

No. 4 Sage Hill (Academy League runner-up) vs. No. 2 St. Margaret’s (Academy League winner), Monday 11:30 a.m. at the Claremont Club in Claremont

Road to the finals: Sage Hill def. Yucaipa 17-1; def. San Gabriel 15-3; def. Arroyo Grande 10-8; def. West Ranch 10-5 (darkness). St. Margaret’s def. Marlborough 13-5; def. Los Osos 11-7; def. Hart 11-7; def. Malibu 13-5.

Outlook: These two teams are no strangers. They met twice during the Academy League season, with both wins going to St. Margaret’s, but Sage Hill picked up a win over the Tartans in a weekend tournament during the season. St. Margaret’s biggest advantage should be singles players Tiffany Cheng and Zoe Oedekerk, two of the top players in the county. Sage Hill will counter with a more balanced lineup that features several strong doubles teams. These two teams met in the finals last year, with St. Margaret’s winning the match in a tiebreaker. Expecting it to be just as close this year seems like the responsible thing to do.

Fryer on football: St. Margaret’s vs. Whittier Christian

September 21st, 2011, 4:59 pm by

ST. MARGARET’S (1-1) VS. WHITTIER CHRISTIAN (1-2)
Where, when:
Whittier College, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: It’s a matchup of the two best small schools teams in Orange County football. St. Margaret’s lost to Coronado two weeks ago, then rolled to a 44-0 victory over a Washington state team, Orcas Island (where bodysurfing must be as risky as it is at the Wedge, just a different form of risk). Whittier Christian took on a big challenge in Week 0, in which the Heralds lost to Espernza, 49-34. Read the rest of this entry »
