Football playoffs: Game-by-game Southern Division previews

CIF-SS FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: SOUTHERN DIVISION

First round

ANAHEIM (5-5) VS. CORONA DEL MAR (8-2)
Where, when: Newport Harbor High, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: The Colonists are in the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, but they get the Sea Kings, the top seed and defending Southern Division champion in the first round. CdM quarterback Cayman Carter is one of the most dynamic players in the division. He has passed for 1,536 yards and 14 TDs and has rushed for 790 yards and 10 TDs. Anaheim running back Josh Tafoya closed out the season with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games, including 292 yards and two TDs in the victory over Magnolia.

LOS AMIGOS (7-3) VS. ESTANCIA (7-3)
Where, when: Estancia High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: The Lobos reached the quarterfinals last season, but they will be underdogs against the Eagles, who reached the semifinals last season, in this opening-round matchup. This game features two of the county’s top running backs with Los Amigos’ Jerry Saldivar going toe-to-toe against Estancia’s Robert Murtha. Saldivar is in the hunt for the county rushing title with 1,899 yards and 23 TDs on 227 carries. Murtha hasn’t put up the same numbers as he did as a junior, but he still has 1,156 yards and 11 TDs on 173 carries.

Southern Division O.C. team analysis

Here are the Orange County teams in the Southern Division:

Anaheim (5-5): The Colonists are in the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. Anaheim beat Magnolia, 35-26, in the regular-season finale to clinch third place. At-large teams: Beckman, Pacific Coast League.

Where, when: Laguna Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Where, when: Ocean View High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded Patriots, the Pacific Coast League champion, have won eight consecutive games and they appear on track to return to the Southern Division finals.

Southern preview: Estancia vs. Woodbridge

ESTANCIA (9-2) VS. WOODBRIDGE (6-5)
Where, when: Irvine High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The fourth-seeded Eagles, who won the Orange Coast League title, are 1-2 against Pacific Coast League teams this season with a victory over Northwood, 43-27, and losses to University, 30-22, and Beckman, 12-10.

Southern preview: Segerstrom vs. Laguna Beach

SOUTHERN DIVISION
SEGERSTROM (9-2) VS. LAGUNA BEACH (9-2)
Where, when: Laguna Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The third-seeded Jaguars, who won the Golden West League championship, bring a seven-game winning streak into this quarterfinal matchup. The Breakers, who took third in the Orange Coast League, and their high-powered offense are averaging 47.5 points per game. Laguna Beach has two 1,000-yard rushers in Drake Martinez (1,536 yards, 25 TDs) and Norton Penney (1,142 yards, 18 TDs). Segerstrom is averaging 310.4 rushing yards per game, led by Sonny Roa (1,084 yards, 6 TDs).

Southern preview: Godinez vs. Beckman

SOUTHERN DIVISION
GODINEZ (5-5) VS. BECKMAN (8-2)
Where, when: Tustin High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Grizzlies won back-to-back games to close out the regular season and clinch the lone at-large berth in the division, and now they get top-seeded Beckman on the road in the first round. Jeff Kim has been unstoppable since returning to the lineup for the Patriots. He has rushed for 927 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. Isaiah Valencia has been a bright spot for Godinez, rushing for 855 yards and 10 touchdowns on 164 carries.

Southern preview: Santa Ana Valley vs. Ocean View

SOUTHERN DIVISION
SANTA ANA VALLEY (7-3) VS. OCEAN VIEW (5-5)
Site, time: Ocean View High, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Seahawks finished tied for second place in the Golden West League, and the Falcons shared the Orange League title with Anaheim. Alex Hernandez (1,067 yards, 11 TDs, 198 carries) leads Santa Ana Valley’s rushing attack and Joe Mohr (1,170 yards, 9 TDs) leads the passing attack. Vince Aranda (36 receptions, 574 yards, 7 TDs) is Mohr’s top target. Ocean View has two 1,000-yard rushers in Timmy Robinson (1,476 yards, 27 TDs) and Travis Sparks (1,148 yards, 6 TDs).

Southern preview: Woodbridge vs. Rancho Alamitos

SOUTHERN DIVISION
WOODBRIDGE (5-5) VS. RANCHO ALAMITOS (9-1)
Site, time: Bolsa Grande High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Warriors won their final two regular-season games to clinch third place in the Pacific Coast League, while the Vaqueros beat Los Amigos in the regular-season finale to clinch the Garden Grove League championship. Derek Calderon powers Woodbridge’s rushing attack. He has 1,366 yards and 13 touchdowns on 225 carries. Brett Hurley has been the Vaqueros’ workhorse with 1,319 yards and 21 touchdowns on 213 carries. He had 233 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries in last week’s victory over Los Amigos.
