No. 17 Dana Hills vs. No. 14 Santa Margarita
Friday, at Dana Hills High, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Perhaps the most interesting opener of Week 0. ... At least it is in my mind.

On one side, we have the Dolphins, who are trying to crack the top three in the South Coast League.

On the other side, there are the Eagles, who are coming off of two down years in the Trinity League, where the top three (Servite, Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei) have gotten stronger.

Who needs the victory the most?

The Dolphins went 2-3 in the SCL last season and that was with quarterback Sean Schroeder, who is now playing for Duke.

The duo of Josh Dean and Trent Mason takes over at quarterback.

The Eagles went 3-7 last year and had to defeat JSerra in the final regular-season game to avoid going winless in the Trinity League.

Santa Margarita’s struggles last season were mostly on defense. The Eagles allowed more than 30 points in eight of their 10 games. There has to be improvement for them to make any significant strides in '09.

So back to my previous question, which team needs this victory the most?

*Rankings are based on the OCVarsity.com preseason poll

The Diablos are back. OK, 10-2 doesn’t look like they disappeared, and they did not. But for a program that won seven consecutive league championships this decade, two second-place finishes in a row is a bit of a comedown. Look for Mission Viejo to return to the top of the league standings this year. The Diablos have several all-league returnees, including speedy running back Jake Marshall and a terrific defensive lineman, Mark Millan, who might be as good as any lineman to come out of that lineman-rich program. Sure, Mission has to replace All-County quarterback Allan Bridgford. But Mission Viejo is a quarterback factory.

(13-1 overall, 5-0 and first place in the South Coast League in 2008)

The Titans sure lost a lot of players to graduation. You can start with last year’s county players of the year, quarterback Robbie Picazo and defensive back (and also a top receiver) Preston King. But the winning tradition is in place and there are plenty of fine returnees, like running back Zach Mitchell, receiver/defensive back Cody Wittick and lineman Sil Ajawara. While another 5-0 league record and a second-consecutive trip to the Pac-5 finals seems unlikely, this still is a solid top 10 team.

Rettig threw for 1,275 yards and 13 touchdowns on a 1-9 team at La Salle of Pasadena last year. He might put off wild numbers running the Tritons’ fly offense. San Clemente has offensive balance, too, with all-league returnee David Espino at running back. The Tritons play in a loaded league, but they should be a top-10 fixture again.

(5-5 overall, 2-3 and 4th place in South Coast League in 2008)

Dana Hills improved record-wise a great deal from 2007 to ’08, going from 1-8-1 two years ago to the .500 finish last year. A softened nonleague schedule helped, but so did a productive passing game led by quarterback Sean Schroeder, the county’s No. 4 passer in ’08. The Dolphins have to replace him, and all-league players Brett Giesen at running back and Dylan Denso at receiver, but they do have three returning offensive lineman. Good enough to be a playoff team in most county leagues, Dana Hills might be fourth-best, at best, again in the South Coast League. And the Dolphins not only have to play Mission Viejo and Tesoro in league, they also have a challenging nonleague schedule that includes Edison, Newport Harbor and Santa Margarita.
