El Toro defeats Tesoro to win South Coast League (video)

The Chargers defeated the Titans 4-1, to take the South Coast League championship.

El Toro captures their fifth straight league championship (previously winning four straight titles in the Sea View League).

Garrett Mundell pitched a complete game, only allowing six hits, while Ryan Joyce put the Chargers ahead for good with a three-run home run in the 5th inning. Read the game story.

Goaltending or game-winner?

Mission Viejo’s Isaac Neilson tipped home the game-winner as time expired, giving his Diablos the victory and the South Coast league championship over Capistrano Valley, 58-57. (Click here for the game story.)

But should he have been called for goaltending? The play occurs at the 2:13 mark of the video.

Video: Capo Valley’s Hamasaki leads 4th quarter surge, defeating Tesoro

The Cougars’ Taylor Hamasaki led a 4th quarter rally as Capo Valley defeated Tesoro 66-58.

The Titans’ Dusty Baker scored 26 pts in a losing effort.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 2

2. Mission Viejo
13-1 overall, 5-0 in the South Coast League last year

The Diablos came oh-so-close to getting to the Pac-5 Division championship game last year, losing to Servite by one point in the semifinals. This will be an inexperienced team at the start of the year, but a talented one that likely will improve impressively as the season progresses.

9. Dana Hills
(9-3 overall, 4-1 in the South Coast League last year)

The Dolphins had a breakthrough season in 2009, beating Santa Margarita and Newport Harbor in nonleague, then beating San Clemente and Tesoro in league games before defeating Orange Lutheran, 30-10, in the first round of the Pac-5 playoffs.

(6-5 overall, 3-2 in the South Coast League last year)

The Tritons might be the third-best team in the South Coast League. But that’s a tough league. San Clemente has one of the county’s top quarterback prospects in Travis Wilson, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound junior.

(5-5 overall, 2-3 in the South Coast League last year)

The Titans took quite a tumble, from going undefeated in the South Coast League and advancing to the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division final in 2008 to fourth place in league and missing the playoffs in ’09.
