Girls basketball: Fields, Olukemi not eligible

November 28th, 2011, 1:12 pm by

The two highest profile transfers in Orange County girls basketball are ineligible as of right now, CIF-SS spokesman Thom Simmons confirmed on Monday.

UCLA-bound Nirra Fields, whose legal guardian is Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike Brown, enrolled at Mater Dei and turned in a valid residential change of address transfer, which was denied by CIF-SS. The next option for Fields, a member of the Canadian national team who played for Oak Hill Academy of Mouth of Wilson, Va., last season, is to apply for a hardship transfer.

At-large teams

November 13th, 2011, 8:06 am by

Southwest Division — Laguna Hills (Sea View League, 7-2 overall record); Sonora (Freeway, 4-6).

Southern Division — Godinez (Orange Coast, 5-5).

As there was only one at-large candidate in the Southwest Division with a record of .500 or better, the CIF-Southern Section had to go to the next-best records group. So Sonora, at 4-6, is in.

In the Southern Division, Savanna also was 5-5 — but Savanna is a No. 5 team (from the Orange League) and Godinez is a No. 4 (from the Orange Coast League). As the formatting rules go, a No. 5 cannot be taken ahead of a No. 4.

Football: At-large contenders for the playoffs

November 12th, 2011, 12:33 pm by

Teams that do not finish high enough in their final league standings for the automatic playoff berths can qualify for at-large berths in some divisions.

The Southwest Division has two at-large berths and the Southern Division has one. There are no at-large berths in the Pac-5 Division.

To be eligible for at-large berth consideration, a team must have a final overall record of .500 or better. Lacking enough .500 teams to fill the at-large berths, the CIF-Southern Section then considers teams with the next-best records.

Here are Orange County’s at-large berth contenders …

November 3rd, 2011, 2:38 pm by

Sonora senior swimmer Nikki Chang has committed to USC, said Rick Shipherd, her club coach with the La Mirada Armada, in an e-mail.

Last season, Chang finished third at the CIF-SS Division 2 finals in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.73) and second in the 500 freestyle (4:48.88).

Chang also is an Olympic Trials qualifier. She’s a great get for Trojans.

Fryer on football: Rancho Alamitos vs. Sonora

September 28th, 2011, 6:02 pm by

RANCHO ALAMITOS (3-0) VS. SONORA (1-3)
Where, when:
La Habra High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Rancho Alamitos, which spent much of the 1990s at or near the top of the Garden Grove League, is off to its best start in years. Ah, but the Vaqueros really have not played a challenging team – until this game.

Fryer on football: Sonora vs. Brea Olinda

September 14th, 2011, 2:54 pm by

SONORA (1-1) VS. BREA OLINDA (2-0)
Where, when:
Brea Olinda High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: “Please, again pick us to lose” is the request from Sonora, after the prediction here was that Sonora last week would lose to Magnolia. Final score: Sonora 45, Magnolia 7. Dang, just missed getting that one right. The Raiders scored four touchdowns in a five-minute span last week against Magnolia, thanks to big special teams play, a ball-hawking defense and an opportunistic offense. Only good teams do that. Ah, but this Brea Olinda team is the best group of Wildcats in several years. Read the rest of this entry »

Fryer on football: Sonora vs. Magnolia

September 7th, 2011, 5:19 pm by

SONORA (0-1) VS. MAGNOLIA (0-0)
Where, when:
Western High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Magnolia is another program from which we received a “don’t overlook us next time” message during the offseason. All right, here is a good test for Magnolia. Read the rest of this entry »

Fryer on football: Sonora vs. Yorba Linda

August 31st, 2011, 5:56 pm by

SONORA (10-3) VS. YORBA LINDA (4-6)
Where, when:
Yorba Linda High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Sonora was Orange County’s surprise team of last year’s playoffs. The Raiders, who finished third in the Freeway League, beat Foothill and previously undefeated Laguna Hills in the Southwest Division before succumbing to league-rival La Habra in the semifinals. Yorba Linda was one Empire League victory away from making its first playoffs appearance. This year, the Mustangs have seniors on the roster for the first time. The talk is that Yorba Linda could challenge for the Empire League title. As for Sonora … was that a comet that flashed by, or can the Raiders sustain what they did last year? This game will answer a lot of questions.

May 27th, 2011, 7:56 pm by

Sonora rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh in the CIF-SS Division 4 quarterfinals game at Palm Desert. Sonora took the lead in the tenth but, after Ryan Garvey scored the tying run for Palm Desert, starting pitcher Brooks Kriske hit a two-out, two-run walkoff homerun to send Sonora packing.

“We were one strike away from an upset victory,” head coach Pat Tellers said. “But in one pitch, there it went.” Read the rest of this entry »
