Water polo recruiting: Rising Foothill center commits to Princeton

Foothill water polo center Hannah Lapkin, one of the most improved players in the county, has committed to Princeton, Knights coach Jeff Colton reports.

Lapkin has replaced the graduated McKenna Mitchell (UC Irvine) as Foothill’s top center and responded with eight goals in five matches. She netted a season-high three goals in a victory at Newport Harbor on Friday.

Lapkin will join a growing tradition of top O.C. centers at Princeton. The Tigers signed Katie Rigler out of Rosary and Diana Murphy of Corona del Mar in recent seasons.

Laguna Beach defender Sydney Saxe also has committed to Princeton, an East Coast powerhouse that finished sixth at NCAAs last season. Lapkin plays club for SOCAL.

Swim: Crean’s Eastin dominates 400 IM at U.S. juniors

Rising Crean Lutheran sophomore and SOCAL club swimmer Ella Eastin captured the 400-yard individual medley at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals by an impressive four seconds Friday at the University of Tennessee.

Eastin, 15, won the race in 4 minutes, 9.66 seconds to tie the 2010 meet-record. The sec0nd-place finisher touched almost 4 1/2 seconds behind Eastin.

Crean and O.C. Waves swimmer Lindsey Engel placed third in the 100 fly (53.34) and fourth in the 100 back (53.59). The junior’s fly time is faster than Tara Thomas’ 2007 O.C. high school record of 53.54.

Swim: Crean’s Engel blazes to junior national title in 50 free!

Swimmer Lindsey Engel of the Orange County Waves club and Crean Lutheran captured the 50-yard freestyle in a sizzling 22.24 seconds at the Speedo Winter Junior National Championships at the University of Tennessee on Thursday.

Engel, 16, shattered the 2010 meet-record of 22.63 held by Faith Johnson of STAR Aquatics of North Carolina.

The junior’s time is about half-a-second faster than Courtney Cashion’s Orange County high school record of 22.75 for Irvine in 2004.

Swim: Two Trinity League/SOCAL swimmers make college decisions

Mater Dei breaststroker Dylan Payne, left, and Orange Lutheran freestyler Hailey Golden — both whom swim club for SOCAL – have committed to four-year schools, SOCAL coach Stephen Pickell reports.

Payne committed to Duke while Golden committed to Cal Baptist in Riverside.

Payne finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.17 seconds) and fifth in the 50 free (21.19) at the CIF Division 1 finals in May.

Golden qualified for the Division 1 prelims in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Swim: Rising Crean Lutheran sophomore Eastin picks new club team

All-County swimmer Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran has joined the SOCAL club team after leaving the Irvine Novaquatics club, SOCAL coach Stephen Pickell confirmed.

Eastin was an Olympic Trials qualifier in multiple events with the Novaquatics during the summer. She is a sophomore at Crean Lutheran.

As a freshman, Eastin claimed CIF-SS Division 3 titles in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.88) and the 100 butterfly (53.93) in division records.

Her 200 IM time was about one second off Kristen Caverly’s county record of 1:58.86 for San Clemente in 2001.

Eastin’s sister, Emily, also is now at SOCAL, Pickell said. Emily is a freshman at Crean Lutheran.

Boys water polo: SOCAL 16-and-under boys capture silver at JOs

SOCAL’s 16-and-under boys water polo team — stacked with Orange County players to watch in 2012 — placed second in the difficult platinum division at the recent Junior Olympics at Stanford.

The team coached by Andy Coffman (University) consisted of goalie Ryan Melosini (Santa Margarita), Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills), John Hartshorne (Northwood), Billy Monjay (Northwood), Jacob Weisenberg (Foothill), Josh Hayashi (Northwood), goalie Massimo Navarretta (Foothill), Conner Talleur (Corona del Mar), Jason Lee (Northwood), Ryan Villanueva (Aliso Niguel), Jake Sanders (University), Trent Samaha (Troy), Kyle Sueme (Foothill), Chris Brose (Foothill) and Griffin Chappell (University).

SOCAL fell in the final to LA Water Polo, 6-4, in the gold medal match.

Water polo: SOCAL 16-and-under girls claim bronze at Junior Olympics

SOCAL’s 16-and-under girls club water polo team captured the bronze medal in the platinum division at the recent Junior Olympics at Stanford.

The squad, coached by former national team player Jillian Kraus (Foothill) along with Bob Corb, consisted of several Orange County standout high school players.

They were: goalie Nikki Quinn (Los Alamitos), Sydney Groot (Foothill), Haley Wan (Santa Margarita), Lauren Norheim (El Toro), Becca Corb (Los Alamitos), Ashley Zwirner (Foothill), Kelli Baumgardner (Santa Margarita), Sage Pfeiffer, Ella Weber (Los Alamitos), Shannon Crowley (Los Alamitos), goalie Keri Tombrello (Villa Park), Nikki Daurio (Beckman) and Kacey Avalos (Santa Margarita).

The SOCAL girls defeated Huntington Beach, 11-4, in the bronze-medal match. San Diego Shores beat Commerce, 8-4, in the gold-medal match.

Girls water polo: Beckman freshman on verge of 100-goal season

Add Beckman’s Nikki Daurio to the list of outstanding freshmen water polo players in Orange County.

Daurio has 99 goals entering Beckman’s nonleague match today against Villa Park. Her output ranks ninth in Orange County.

Daurio is a veteran of the powerhouse SOCAL club program.

Last summer, she was a second-team All-American at the Junior Olympics. She also been part of the U.S. Cadet program.

Beckman tied with Northwood for second in the Pacific Coast League.

Water polo recruiting: Los Al’s Fattal ‘not close’ on a decision

Los Alamitos senior-to-be water polo player Rachel Fattal, pictured left on defense, said in an e-mail Monday that she is “not close” to making her college decision.

The Register’s reigning player of the year is preparing to play for the United States at the FINA World Junior Women’s Water Polo Championships next month in Italy.

“I really don’t even want to think about it too much until after Jr. Worlds,” Fattal wrote, “and most of the coaches know and respect that.”

Girls water polo: SOCAL, Huntington reach semifinals at Junior Olympics

SOCAL Black and Huntington Beach Blue each won Saturday to reach the semifinals of the 18-and-under girls platinum division at USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics.

SOCAL Black defeated Northern California’s Diablo, 8-4, in a quarterfinal at Foothill while Huntington beat Florida’s Riptides, 6-4, in another quarterfinal at Santa Margarita.

In the semifinals Sunday, No. 8 seeded SOCAL will again meet top-seeded Santa Barbara. The match will be played at Foothill at 9:15 a.m.

Water polo recruiting: Foothill’s Porter names top two

Foothill senior-to-be water polo player Jessie Porter has two favorites in her recruiting process but also remains interested in two other schools as well.

The sharp-shooting attacker reported at the recent California State High School Water Polo Championships that Cal and UCLA are her current favorites.

Porter said she also is interested in Hawaii and Maryland.

She will be playing for SOCAL at the upcoming Junior Olympics in Orange County.
