Football recruiting: Servite running back to grey shirt at Utah

January 31st, 2013, 7:11 pm by

Servite senior running back Salesi “Charlie” Eteaki (6-0, 202) will grey shirt at Utah and enroll at the Pac-12 school in 2014, Friars football coach Troy Thomas said Thursday night.

“I think it will end up being a good thing,” Thomas said.

Servite recently saw a successful grey shirt by lineman Miles Williams, who delayed his enrollment to Cal Poly SLO. Thomas said Williams used his delayed enrollment to get stronger and is now at the FCS contender.

Boys basketball: Fryer’s top 10 vote

January 28th, 2013, 12:52 pm by

I could not figure out what to do with Servite. The Friars have beaten El Toro and Orange Lutheran. But how much of that was The Asylum — the greatest rooting section in the county — and how much was that the team?

I moved Servite in and out of my top 10, then finally decided this is how I would vote today …

Football: Servite to face De La Salle in 2013, 2014

January 10th, 2013, 1:47 pm by

Servite’s football team will play De La Salle of Concord on Oct. 5, Servite coach Troy Thomas confirmed today.

It will be a Servite home game. Site of the game will be announced later. Servite will play De La Salle in 2014, too, when it will be a De La Salle home game.

De La Salle won another CIF State Open Division championship last month. Bob Ladouceur last week resigned as De La Salle varsity football coach, a position he held for 34 years. Justin Alumbaugh was promoted from assistant coach to head coach for the Spartans.

De La Salle has finished No. 1 national rankings seven times during Ladouceur’s tenure.

Servite last season had its first sub-.500 finish in several years, ending with a 3-7 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since Thomas became the school’s coach in 2005.

Football: Servite vs. De La Salle in 2013?

December 18th, 2012, 2:54 pm by

De La Salle of Concord defensive coordinator Terry Eidson said today that discussions have been initiated that would have Servite playing at De La Salle next season.

“We want to do it,” Eidson said. “We’re working on it.”

Servite has opponents secured for four of its five nonleague games for 2013. The Friars have tried to get an Orange County team to fill that opening, but with no success. El Toro is among the teams that turned down a Servite invitation to play in ’13.

Scheduling games against out-of-area teams can be tricky, with finding mutual open dates the primary challenge.

With winter vacation dates approaching, it is likely that finalizing a Servite-De La Salle game will not occur until January if it happens at all. And usually these arrangements are two-year, home-and-home contracts, meaning one team is the home team one season and the other team is the home team the following season.

The next Canyon coach? Interesting names in the mix?

December 18th, 2012, 1:22 pm by

Canyon athletic director Scott Lawson said the school hopes to announce its varsity football head coach by the end of the week.

Lawson of course could not identify the finalists for the position. But two names that could be in that finalists group are Jim Kunau and Matt Mitchell.

Kunau coached at Orange Lutheran for many years before being relieved of his duties at the end of the 2011 season. Kunau transformed Lutheran from a good small-schools team into one of the better programs in California, leading the Lancers to CIF section and state championships. What he did at Lutheran remains one of the more impressive coaching performances in county football history.

Mitchell has been an offensive coordinator at a few places, most recently at Servite. He was Servite’s offensive coordinator for the first couple of weeks of the 2012 season before Servite coach Troy Thomas sought a different direction and ousted Mitchell.
