Former Los Alamitos standout and current Griffins assistant coach Scott Davidson scored twice but the U.S. men’s water polo team opened the UANA World Aquatic Championship Qualification Tournament in Calgary with a disappointing, 10-6, loss to Canada on Wednesday.
USA usually defeats Canada but the Canadians led, 7-3, late in the third. The Canadians didn’t qualify for London but were 10th at Worlds in 2011.
The game marked the debut of U.S. interim head coach Jovan Vavic, the USC men’s and women’s coach. Captain Jeff Powers and Ryan Bailey – both UC Irvine products and silver medalists from 2008, each scored once.
The Americans need a top-two finish in the tournament to qualify for July’s World Championships in Barcelona. There are only two other men’s teams: Argentina and Brazil.
