Welcome back, Al Hrabosky!

February 6th, 2012, 1:48 pm by

Al Hrabosky, left, was one of the top relief pitchers of the 1970s, most of which he spent with the St. Louis Cardinals. Look him up at wikipedia.

Hrabosky, known as “The Mad Hungarian” (again, look him up), is being inducted in the Savanna athletics hall of fame Tuesday at halftime of the Magnolia-Savanna boys basketball game at Savanna.

Hrabosky works on cable broadcasts of St. Louis Cardinals games. The Cardinals, World Series champs, used to have this guy named Albert Pujols on their team. Wonder where he went …

Savanna has had several excellent athletes go on to bigger and better things, like the Hoffman brothers, Glenn and Trevor, who also are in the Savanna hall (don’t forget about Greg Hoffman, who was an excellent boys basketball coach at Western in the 199s).

Savanna’s Kennedy, Edison’s Lopes stay local

November 9th, 2011, 2:28 pm by

Savanna catcher AJ Kennedy signed his letter of intent today with Cal State Fullerton. Kennedy signed the document during lunch break at Savanna.

Kennedy has been Savanna’s starting catcher since his freshman year.

Edison shortstop Timmy Lopes signed with UC Irvine. Lopes played second base last year, and moves over to shortstop this spring; his brother Christian, now at USC, plays short for the Chargers last year. Timmy Lopes is a quick kid with terrific hands and a strong arm.

Orange League
SAVANNA (3-2, 0-0) VS. KATELLA (3-2, 0-0)
Where, when: Glover Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Let’s first salute two of the county’s better coaches, dedicated veteran guys who always get the most out of their rosters, Savanna’s Roger Whalen and Katella’s Fred DiPalma. Their teams are not going to get on TV, and they are not going to see their teams highlighted in the county top 10. But they continue to serve and serve well.

Girls water polo: Katella holds off Savanna in play-in match

February 11th, 2011, 10:08 pm by

Senior Christina Almazan scored four goals and goalie Jill Prieto made eight saves to lead Katella’s girls water polo team past Savanna, 9-7, in a one-game playoff Friday night at Kennedy for second place in the four-team Orange League.

Katella (14-14, 4-3) and Savanna (12-15, 3-4) were ranked in the latest Division 7 Top 10 poll but each needed to win Friday to be eligible for the playoffs because their overall records were under .500 entering the day. Teams need to be at least .500 to apply for an at-large berth in the playoffs.

“It was pretty much a do-or-die situation,” Katella coach Ron Cunningham said.

Savanna cut Katella’s lead to 8-7 in the fourth period but the Knights added another score to reach the playoffs for the first time under Cunningham, in his fifth season.

Girls water polo: Big playoff match in Orange League on Friday

February 10th, 2011, 11:36 pm by

For fans of Division 7 girls water polo, there’s a big playoff match in the Orange League on Friday. Katella and Savanna will play for second place in the four-team league.

The match is scheduled for Kennedy at 5 p.m.

In the latest Division 7 rankings, Katella (13-14, 3-3) is fourth and Savanna (12-14, 3-3) is seventh. But interestingly, the loser — even as Top 10-team in the division — could be out of the playoff because of a sub .500 overall record.

Frankly Fryer: Savanna vs. Corona del Mar

September 1st, 2010, 5:33 pm by

SAVANNA (7-4) VS. CORONA DEL MAR (4-6)
Site, time:
Newport Harbor High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Savanna annually seems to have speedy players at the skill positions, which has not generally been the case lately at Corona del Mar. And CdM will have new faces in the offensive backfield, which could mean it might take some time for the Sea Kings to get it together.
