Why are they playing?

February 10th, 2012, 11:40 am by

No matter who wins or loses tonight’s Orange Lutheran-JSerra game at Irvine Valley College, a 7 p.m. game that decides who in the Trinity League finishes in third place — the league’s final guaranteed playoff berth — both teams will go to the playoffs. There will be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions, for JSerra in Division 4AA and Orange Lutheran in 1AA, and both are high enough in their divisional rankings to get an at-large berth (JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, OLu is No. 3 in 1A).

But the coaches, JSerra’s Joedy Gardner and Orange Lutheran’s Chris Nordstrom, don’t want to leave it to chance.

As Nordstrom said, “Weird things can happen. It would be difficult to face our players, their parents and people at our school if we somehow did not get into the playoffs because we decided to not play this game.”

A couple of third-place games today that really could matter:

Costa Mesa vs. Godinez at Calvary Chapel, Orange Coast League, 7 p.m.

Los Amigos vs. Santiago at Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove League, 4 p.m.

Orange Lutheran-JSerra third-place game

February 9th, 2012, 11:21 pm by

Orange Lutheran and JSerra will play Friday, at 7 p.m., at Irvine Valley College to decide which team gets the Trinity League’s third and final guaranteed playoff berth.

They are tied for third with 5-5 league records. While it is most likely that the Trinity League’s No. 4 team will get an at-large berth in the playoffs, JSerra coach Joedy Gardner and Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom don’t want to chance having a coin flip determine the No. 3 team and then perhaps the No. 4 still not getting in, as unlikely as that would seem. Lutheran is ranked No. 3 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1A, and JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, and there should be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions to accommodate them.

Los Amigos and Santiago play a Garden Grove League third-place playoff game Friday, too, at Bolsa Grande. Now, the loser of that one might be in danger of not qualifying for an at-large berth. That game could be a wild one.

Nothing Sweet about devastating Canyon loss (video)

June 5th, 2011, 1:29 am by

Lauren Sweet broke the hearts of Canyon as she came up to the plate in the 7th inning, and delivered a walk-off grand slam.

Santiago of Corona defeated Canyon 4-1 for the division one championship.

The Comanches Cheyanne Tarango only allowed two hits, but labored in the 7th, walking three batters.

Canyon’s only run came by a Taylor Swearingen home run in the 3rd inning, when Santiago outfielder Brittany Abacherli crashed through the outfield fence trying to make the catch.

Softball: Santiago vs. El Mo live blog remix

May 31st, 2011, 8:35 pm by

Santiago of Corona invaded Orange County to face El Modena in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals. I was there doing a live blog. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM EL MODENA HIGH

Darth Vader, a.k.a. Santiago coach John Perez, has crossed county lines to crush a Rebel Alliance, a.k.a. the El Modena Vanguards.

That’s right, it’s the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals. Will the Rebellion be crushed or will the Rebels rise up and destroy the Death Star? The Force is strong in the Sharks.

The ability to kill a planet is insignificant compared to the power of The Force,” Lord Vader tells me before the game.

I tell Lord Vader The Force is strong in these Vanguards.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing,” Vader says before attempting to Force choke me.

Let the mind games begin. El Mo coach Steve Harrington and Lord Vader are hooking up before the game. Let’s just say pleasantries have been exchanged.

You don’t want to miss this one. I’ll have updates from all the CIF-SS semifinals involving O.C. teams. My spies are everywhere.

First pitch is at 3:15 p.m. Stay tuned for all the action.

Softball: Can El Mo blow up the Death Star?

Can the Rebel Alliance, a.k.a. El Mo, blow up the Death Star? That is the question. We shall see.

Jordan Mowatt with a one-out double in the top of the seventh. She takes third on Carissa Turang’s ground out.

Softball: Rebel Alliance is fired up

Michigan-bound Haylie Wagner with a 1-2-3 inning to retire Santiago in the top of the sixth.

The Rebel Alliance is fired up.

Devin Vanderhoff struck out her first two plate appearances and she calmly smacks a single up the middle to lead things off for the Vanguards in the bottom of the sixth.

Softball: Does Perez celebrate Sithmas?

May 31st, 2011, 4:40 pm by

Brenda Lee with a single to lead off the top of the fifth for Santiago.

I wonder if Lord Vader, a.k.a. Santiago coach John Perez, celebrates Sithmas?

El Mo ace Haylie Wagner strikes out Lauren Sweet and then Reece Vanderhoff turns a double play to end the inning.

Softball: Don’t count out the Rebel Alliance

May 31st, 2011, 4:25 pm by

One thing I can guarantee is El Mo will not go quietly. The Rebel Alliance will attack the Death Star.

Dani Hernandez leads off the top of the fourth with a single.

Brittany Abacherli singles through the right side of the infield and the Imperial Troops, a.k.a. the Sharks, have runners on first and second with no outs. Lord Vader is pumping up his troops.
