LosAl played very well as did Dos Pueblos. Chargers are now the team to beat in Division I.

Dos Pueblos scored three counterattack goals in the third to open a 4-1 lead. DP plays fast and passes well enough to get off quick shots. Smith is playing well enough for LosAl in the cage it takes a good pass and quick shot to beat her.

Dos Pueblos leads the championship match, 1-0, at halftime on a near-side counterattack strike by lefty Sienna Van Alphen in the second period. Los Al is taking a lot of shots from the perimeter - mostly lobs - and getting some decent looks but Sami Hill has been tough in the cage for the Chargers. Hill already has eight saves.

Savanna Smith - and has she come on for LosAl - also has been excellent with five saves.

Kaley Dodson scored from 6 meters out with 45 seconds left as No. 4 Los Alamitos continued its impressive run here at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions with a 10-9 victory against No. 3 Newport Harbor.

So the slightly-surprising finals-pairing will pit seventh-seeded LosAl against fourth-seeded Dos Pueblos. Final should start around 5 p.m.

Slightly surprising? Well, Dos Pueblos had lost at full-strength to CdM earlier in the season. And Los Al was playing very well before this tournament but thee Griffins were the No. 7 seed.

GOLETA Los Al and Newport are tied at halftime, 5-5, in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of the champions. Nina McCall has re-emerged for the Lady Tars, scoring three goals.

Fourth-seeded Dos Pueblos leads top-seeded and top-ranked Corona del Mar, 4-1, at halftime in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions here at sunny Dos Pueblos High School.

DP goalie Sami Hill has been very tough and Kiley Neushul has two goals.

No. 4 Los Alamitos 6, No. 2 Laguna Beach 5: Cory Dodson scored with 1:19 left in the quarterfinal match to give the Griffins a 6-4 lead against the No. 2-seeded Breakers (13-2). Laguna Beach's Natasha Schulman scored at the buzzer but Los Alamitos (14-1) advanced to play Sunset League rival Newport Harbor in the semifinals Saturday at Dos Pueblos at 12:15 p.m.

No. 3 Newport Harbor 8, Coronado 3: Krissy Burger made 12 saves to help the third-seeded Sailors (12-3) reach the semifinals. Newport Harbor dropped its season-opener against Coronado, 9-7.

Dos Pueblos 5, No. 5 Foothill 4: Tiera Schroeder scored on a counterattack with 1:40 left to lift the host and No. 4-seeded Chargers (13-2) past the Knights (7-6). Kelli Boling scored twice and Katie Groff made 10 saves for Foothill.

No. 1 Corona del Mar 7, Montebello 4: Elise Molnar scored twice and Kate Baldoni made eight saves to lead the defending champion Sea Kings (14-0), who play host Dos Pueblos in the semifinals Saturday at 11:10 a.m.

Cory Dodson scored with 1:19 left to give LosAl a 6-4 lead. Laguna's Natasha Schulman scored the final goal at the buzzer. So LosAl almost held Laguna Beach to four goals - that's excellent defense.

As for Laguna Beach, it's been a tough two days. The Breakers ventured north with an undefeated record but lost to Dos Pueblos by one on Thursday and fall again by one.

Bateman also said that DP star Kiley Neushul (thumb) was expected to play for the Chargers.

The Sea Queens are seeded first and could encounter Neushul and the No. 4-seeded Chargers in the semifinals Saturday at 11:10 am at Dos Pueblos. In the second round, DP could face Foothill or Rosary but I don't think either of those top-10 county squads can beat DP.

Neushul suffered the injury during training with the U.S. junior team.

CdM coach Aaron Chaney speaks highly of Neushul but his squad defeated DP with Neushul this season, 10-8.

It also will be interesting to see if Neushul returns Thursday for a nonleague match against visiting No. 2 Laguna Beach. That is certainly a good tuneup for each squad. DP beat LB in the Division II finals last season but the Chargers have since moved to Division I.
