If Mater Dei football cannot use Santa Ana Stadium as a home stadium starting in 2012, where would the Monarchs go for home football games?

Orange Coast College? That is Orange Lutheran’s home field already, and also Orange Coast’s, of course. There might be enough open dates, on Thursdays, some Fridays and some Saturdays, to make that a choice.

Mater Dei and SA Stadium

July 18th, 2011, 11:53 am by

Mater Dei will play most of  its varsity football home games at Santa Ana Stadium this season but MD’s home football site for 2012 and beyond still remains in question.

The city of Santa Ana, which owns and manages Santa Ana Stadium, has had preliminary talks with the Chivas USA soccer group about making Santa Ana Stadium a new home for Chivas. A website — santaanasos.org — calls it the “Secret Chivas Deal” and will hold a rally on the topic Thursday at a home in the city’s splendid Floral Park neighborhood.

Mater Dei athletic director Phil Bellomo said the Monarchs are at Santa Ana Stadium for 2011 but has “no idea” about ’12 and beyond. He said the school has not begun to consider where it might play varsity football home games should Santa Ana Stadium be unavailable to Mater Dei.

Santa Ana Stadium — AKA Eddie West Field, Santa Ana Bowl or “The Bowl” — has always been MD’s home field, except for rare events like this season’s Servite-Mater Dei game, MD’s home game, which will be at Angel Stadium on Nov. 4.

Bellomo said Mater Dei will not have a representative at the rally, which is three blocks from my house so maybe I should go.
