Football recruiting: San Clemente’s Kyle Murphy picks Stanford

February 1st, 2012, 1:42 pm by

In Orange County’s most anticipated announcement of National Signing Day, San Clemente All-County left tackle Kyle Murphy (6-7, 280) said moments ago that he is headed to Stanford. Murphy entered the day as one of the top uncommitted players in the country.Murphy, the No. 1 recruit in Orange County, was thought to have narrowed his decision to Stanford and USC. He made the decision in front of San Clemente’s library — complete with an arch of red, white and black balloons — as part of a signing day ceremony rather than make a big splash on television like many top recruits in the Class of 2012.

“The school I’m going to for the next four or five years … is Stanford,” Murphy announced before the large crowd burst into cheers.

The senior took official recruiting trips to Oregon, Florida, Stanford and USC. He is considered by some to the No. 1 tackle prospect in the nation. He was a Fab 15 selection and played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

“It’s definitely the hardest decision I’ve ever (made) in my life,” Murphy said.
