Girls Tennis: CIF-SS Division 3 finals preview

November 20th, 2011, 6:32 pm by

No. 4 Sage Hill (Academy League runner-up) vs. No. 2 St. Margaret’s (Academy League winner), Monday 11:30 a.m. at the Claremont Club in Claremont

Road to the finals: Sage Hill def. Yucaipa 17-1; def. San Gabriel 15-3; def. Arroyo Grande 10-8; def. West Ranch 10-5 (darkness). St. Margaret’s def. Marlborough 13-5; def. Los Osos 11-7; def. Hart 11-7; def. Malibu 13-5.

Outlook: These two teams are no strangers. They met twice during the Academy League season, with both wins going to St. Margaret’s, but Sage Hill picked up a win over the Tartans in a weekend tournament during the season. St. Margaret’s biggest advantage should be singles players Tiffany Cheng and Zoe Oedekerk, two of the top players in the county. Sage Hill will counter with a more balanced lineup that features several strong doubles teams. These two teams met in the finals last year, with St. Margaret’s winning the match in a tiebreaker. Expecting it to be just as close this year seems like the responsible thing to do.

Sage Hill’s Robbie Simon is healthy this season, and he’s been leading a deep team of six seniors. Valencia also has a stud singles player in Jonathan Hammel, who lost in the round of 16 during the CIF-SS individual tournament. The two teams have not met this year.

Football recruiting: Sage Hill running back headed to USC

Sage Hill standout running back Taylor Ross (5-9, 195) — the school’s all-time leading rusher — has accepted a preferred walk-on at USC, Lightning coach J.R. Tolver reports.

Tolver said the Trojans like Ross at running back but the senior also can play defensive back and kick.

Ross posted some huge numbers and is an excellent athlete. He has played soccer and lacrosse at Sage Hill.

In 2010, he rushed for almost 1,900 yards and racked up 90 tackles. Tolver said Ross made big strides from his junior to senior season.

“If you look at his film … and take away the small-school stigma,” Tolver said, “people would be impressed.”
