Schedules are subject to change. Kick off times are 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Football: O’Connell coaching at Servite

Former Saddleback High and Tesoro football head coach Jim O’Connell is an assistant coach at Servite, Servite head coach Troy Thomas confirmed this morning. O’Connell will coach the varsity offensive line at Servite.

O’Connell coached Tesoro to CIF-Southern Section championships in 2004 and ’05. He coached at Saddleback the past few years.

Football: O’Connell resigns at Saddleback

Jim O’Connell has resigned as football coach at Saddleback, school athletic director Tim Mesenhimer announced today.

O’Connell coached the Roadrunners for four years to a combined record of 3-37. Saddleback was 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the Orange Coast League in 2010.

O’Connell previously coached at Tesoro, where he led the Titans to CIF-Southern Section Division IX championships in 2004 and ’05.

Coming off the disappointment of consecutive winless seasons, the Roadrunners feel as though 2009 will be a season in which they begin building the program back toward respectability.

Boys soccer: Dottore’s top 11 players of the month

I have read countless posts on this blog about how the only real soccer is being played in academy soccer, and the boys who aren’t serious about the game are stuck playing in high school.

Well, those kinds of comments undercut everything that these players, who are loyal to their schools, have been doing this month.

True there are gifted players in academy soccer, but there is a lot of talent left on the high school field as well.

I covered the sport when kids such as Danny Califf and Tomas Serna were on the field, and I have seen some kids this year who would have been able to keep up with them.

(Which brings up something else. Califf always seemed to make some time for his high school team before heading off to play in Egypt or some other exotic place.)

Playing high school sports just seems to make the four years you spend in a school mean a bit more. OK, that’s my two cents worth, now onto what this post is really about.

The top 11 players in December that I HAVE SEEN (notice those words that are capitalized. I haven’t seen La Habra, Troy or JSerra, among others).
