Football recruiting: Santa Margarita’s Wolpin makes decision

Santa Margarita All-County running back Ryan Wolpin (5-9, 192) has committed to FCS Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference, the senior said in an e-mail Tuesday night.

Wolpin made an official recruiting trip to Northern Colorado over the weekend. He also visited South Dakota State earlier in the recruiting season.

“It felt like the right fit for me,” Wolpin wrote in an e-mail of Northern Colorado, “it is closer to home, great location, loved the coaching staff … the campus was impressive and great opportunity to make an impact right away.”

Wolpin landed a full scholarship from Northern Colorado, which finished 4-4 in the Big Sky this past season.

He rushed for 1,368 yards on 203 carries for Santa Margarita for 2012. He should help Northern Colorado’s ground attack.

Football recruiting: Santa Margarita running back grabs first offer

All-County running back Ryan Wolpin of Santa Margarita has been offered by FCS South Dakota State of the Missouri Valley Conference, the senior reports.

Wolpin rushed for 1,637 yards and 27 touchdowns last season for the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division and state Division 1 champion.

The first-team All-County selection also is receiving interest from Boise State and FCS San Diego. Wolpin attended Boise State’s camp over the summer.

Santa Margarita defeats San Clemente for Pac-5 championship (video)

The Eagles took advantage of the Tritons mistakes during a 9:56 4th quarter drive to capture the Pac-5 championship 27-13. Ryan Wolpin ran for two touchdowns while Johnny Stanton had 2 TDs.

Football: Santa Margarita stifles Orange Lutheran (video)

Santa Margarita bounced back after last week’s lackluster performance to defeat Orange Lutheran, 31-10, on Friday night.

The Eagles’ Johny Stanton was outstanding, throwing for 164 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Ryan Wolpin contributed 105 yards rushing and a touchdown.

The loss drops Orange Lutheran to 0-2 in the Trinity League, making the Lancers’ next game against Mater Dei “do or die,” according to Coach Jim Kunau.

Tough Knocks – Santa Margarita: Against all odds

In Episode 6 of “Tough Knocks,” Santa Margarita has to deal with a couple of key injuries after a big win over Carson. One of the injured players, Konner Kafentzis, goes into the details of how he received his concussion.

The Eagles manage to build up a big lead against another O.C. Top 10 team, Los Alamitos, in a thrilling Week 4 game. However, a mistake-filled fourth quarter by the Eagles disappoints head coach Harry Welch, who is trying to get his team ready for league play.

Welch unhappy with Santa Margarita effort in victory (video)

Santa Margarita coach Harry Welch saw his team improve to 5-0 with a victory over Los Alamitos, 38-27, on Thursday night, but Welch wasn’t pleased with his team’s effort in the contest.

“I think we were waiting for the game to be over,” Welch said. “I love my team, but I’m not an exceptionally proud father right now.

“We made mistakes that we normally don’t make. I’m not very happy.”

The Eagles led by 24 points after a Ryan Wolpin touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but that’s when things started to go down hill for the stars of OCVarsity.com’s “Tough Knocks” show.

Los Alamitos marched down the field and scored on a 7-yard Cody Paul touchdown run, and the Griffins scored again after Eagles quarterback Johnny Stanton fumbled the ball away.

It was a sloppy fourth quarter from the No. 3 ranked team in the county.

Tough Knocks – Episode 5: Playing with a purpose

Episode 5 of “Tough Knocks” features Santa Margarita taking part in Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Eagles players, faculty members and team staff members wear blue wristbands as part of the effort to raise awareness about the disease, and Eagles coach Harry Welch recalls his own battle a year ago with prostate cancer.

On the field, the Eagles have a difficult time with L.A. City power Carson. The Colts build an early lead, 13-7, but Welch gets his players to regroup at halftime. The Eagles bounce back with a strong second half to defeat Carson, 39-21, and improve their record to 4-0.

Tough Knocks – Episode 4: Pray, then play (video)

Episode 4 of Tough Knocks features an inside look at Santa Margarita’s prayer service, followed by a tough game against Trabuco Hills.

Eagles coach Harry Welch outlines the importance of prayer to the Santa Margarita football program, and wide receiver Connor O’Brien details his spiritual journey to the gridiron.

Trabuco Hills gives Santa Margarita a tough game, but the Eagles pull out the victory, 35-14.
