Chris Rivera — best SS in the USA?

July 25th, 2012, 8:13 am by

Chris Rivera, who will be a senior this coming season at shortstop at El Dorado, was featured in this online story at ESPN.com. The writer stated that Rivera might be the best high school shortstop in the nation.

He did not make All-Orange County first or second team this past season. Why? Because he was All-Century League second team, as selected by the league’s coaches. If a guy is second team all-league, he is not going to be All-County.

He batted .194 this past season. But defensively, Rivera is spectacular. He makes plays no other high school shortstop in Orange County will make. And that includes David Fletcher, a pretty good one at Cypress.

Rivera also is a fine pitcher and an intelligent young man. He committed to Cal State Fullerton.

The link includes praise for Cypress catcher Tyler Alamo and Mater Dei infielder Ryan McMahon (also a very good quarterback at MD).

Football: Mater Dei takes second at Air Strike passing tourney (updated)

June 9th, 2012, 8:05 pm by

Mater Dei’s football team showed its familiar bounce for the Air Strike passing tournament Saturday.

The Monarchs hope it’s a sign that they can bounce back when the real games start this fall.

Mater Dei reached a third consecutive Air Strike final but fell to receiver-loaded Alemany of Mission Hills, 28-12, at Dana Hills.

The Monarchs missed the playoffs last season — a rare occurrence for the Trinity League school — but offered plenty of competitive fire Saturday.

Mater Dei handed defending Pac-5 Division and state Division 1 bowl champion Santa Margarita its first passing defeat this offseason, 33-21, in the quarterfinals. The Monarchs also handled Mission Viejo and rising junior quarterback Ian Fieber, 34-19, in the semifinals.

Mater Dei senior-to-be quarterback Ryan McMahon had a strong day as did senior wide receiver/linebacker Thomas Duarte.
