Softball: Norco vs. Rosary Live Blog Remix

May 23rd, 2013, 9:14 pm by

I did a live blog for the Rosary-Norco CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinal on Thursday at Cal State Fullerton. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM CAL STATE FULLERTON

I didn’t have to set up the Mobile OCVarsity Media Center today because Rosary is playing defending Division 1 champion Norco at Anderson Family Field at Cal State Fullerton.

Rosary whacked top-seeded Esperanza, 5-3, and outslugged Edison, 15-6, to reach the quarterfinals. Norco beat Oxnard, 3-0, and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Cypress, 3-2, to rech the quarterfinals. The Rosary-Norco winner plays the Pacifica-Orange Lutheran winner in the semifinals on Tuesday.

No more messing around. Let’s get down to business.

IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!

Norco, are you ready?

Rosary, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!

Murphy to replace Confer as Rosary’s cross country and track and field coach

November 7th, 2012, 10:06 am by

Rosary athletic director Rob Ickes has announced that alumna Jennifer Murphy has been appointed the school’s new cross country and track and field coach.

Murphy replaces Thom Confer, who departed to take on the same coaching duties at El Modena.

Murphy was a four year varsity cross county and track and field athlete at Rosary from 1998-2002. She was named the school’s freshman athlete of the year.

She competed in both cross country and track and field at UC Santa Barbara and served as an assistant coach for the San Marcos boys’ and girls’ cross country teams.

Recently, Murphy has served as an assistant at Servite, coaching in both cross country and as a distance coach in track and field.

“We are very excited to have an exceptional coach like Jennifer join our staff,” Ickes said in a statement. “She brings a wealth of knowledge to our young women, not only as a very competent and successful coach, but as a Rosary alumna.”

OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch: Week 6

October 3rd, 2012, 4:21 pm by

I brought in Apollo Creed for inspiration to help me with last week’s OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch and once again I was crushed by JSerra girls basketball coach Mary Rossignol.

What is happening? Am I trapped in an alternate OCVarsity universe? Have I offended the OCVarsity gods?

After suffering my fourth consecutive OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch defeat, it was time to go on a Vision Quest. I needed to go on a spiritual journey to find a way to break this four-Deathmatch losing streak.

So I found myself wandering the desert like Caine from “Kung Fu.” Armed only with my spiritual training and skill in the martial arts, I fought desperados and ruffians who tried to oppress the innocent and helpless.

Then it was back to wandering the desert. Finally, as I was about to pass out due to heat exhaustion and dehydration, I had a vision. A majestic creature appeared in the heavens. It was an eagle soaring in the sky. THAT’S IT!!!!

I quickly made my way back to civilization. I have an OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch to win. This week’s OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch game is the Trinity League opener between No. 9 Servite (2-3) and top-ranked Santa Margarita (5-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Saddleback College.

Andrew Moore rushed for 151 yards and scored two touchdowns to help Servite snap a two-game offensive funk and beat St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs, 38-6. The Friars had been shut out the two previous games.

Santa Margarita has been on a record-smashing tour on the way to a 5-0 start, but the Eagles lost Nebraska-bound quarterback Johnny Stanton to a season-ending knee injury in their 35-27 triumph over St. Bonaventure of Ventura. But the Eagles still have running back Ryan Wolpin to rely on and they have great offensive and defensive lines to do battle in the trenches. Josh Canty will probably get a lot of the snaps at quarterback and Connor O’Brien could be a factor out of the wildcat formation.

Is Servite back? Was the St. Paul victory just a mirage? Can Santa Margarita survive without Stanton? We will find out on Friday night.

I’m going with the Eagles, of course, and I’m putting my Godzilla action figure on the line.

The next step was to find a fanatical supporter of the Servite Friars for this OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch. That’s not a problem in Credo Nation. Cathie Fryer stepped up to accept my OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch challenge. That’s right, Mrs. FryDay Night, the wife of Mr. FryDay Night, is ready to do battle inside the OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch arena.

Mrs. FryDay Night has true Credo Nation bona fides. She is a 1976 graduate of Rosary where she was the recipient of the Royalette Award, the highest honor bestowed by the school. Rosary is Servite’s sister school, so Mrs. FryDay Night has grown up as a Rosary and Servite supporter. She bleeds Rosary red and Servite black.

Mrs. FryDay Night’s daughter, Stephanie, a 2004 Rosary graduate, played volleyball for the Royals, and her son, Sean, a 2007 Servite graduate, played right tackle for the Friars before going on to play at Catholic University. Mrs. FryDay Night stills works as a volunteer and helps out as a fundraiser for Servite and Rosary.

As I walked into Mr. and Mrs. FryDay Night’s home on Tuesday evening to solidify our OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch with a blood oath, I was blown away by the Servite shrine. I mean, it was like one of those shrines that a stalker or serial killer has except it was dedicated to Servite football.

There were Credo signs, Credo banners and bedazzled Credo signs. There were Servite necklaces, Servite bracelets and Servite earrings. There were Servite t-shirts, Servite blankets and Servite bleacher chairs. There was an amazing photo of Sean made up of miniature photos of Servite players and fans from when the Friars played Mater Dei at Angel Stadium in 2006. There was autographed Chris Galippo helmet and an autographed Steve Beuerlein football.

Mrs. FryDay Night told me Credo is Latin for “I believe.” I believe Mrs. FryDay Night might be Servite’s most fanatical supporter. Mrs. FryDay Night is the most devout supporter of her team I have come across in OCVarsity Pickapalooza Deathmatch history. I’m starting to get a little nervous. I do have a four-Deathmatch losing streak and Servite is known to pull off huge upsets out of nowhere.

Mrs. FryDay Night is putting up her Royal Bear that is holding a photo of former Servite football coach Larry Toner against my Godzilla action figure.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!

July 26th, 2012, 11:35 am by

Softball: Rosary vs. Fountain Valley Live Blog Remix

May 15th, 2012, 9:03 pm by

I did a live blog from the Fountain Valley vs. Rosary CIF-SS Division 1 wild-card game on Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM CAL STATE FULLERTON

Can you feel it in the air? It’s playoff time! Win or go fishing. I love this time of year. I’m at Cal State Fullerton for the Division 1 wild-card game between Fountain Valley (18-11) and Rosary (17-11). The winner of this game gets second-seeded Pacifica on Thursday in the first round.

Both these teams have proven they can knock off top teams. Rosary took third in the Trinity League and Fountain Valley took fourth in the Sunset League and was the lone county team to get an at-large berth in Division 1.

Fountain Valley’s top players are Monmouth-bound pitcher Cersissa Rivera and UC Santa Barbara-bound shortstop Emily Brucelas. Fountain Valley has the edge in the pitching department.

Rosary has a deeper lineup and can slug it out with pretty much anybody in the county. Rosary’s top players are St. John’s-bound infielder Kaitlin Fitzgerald and Arizona State-bound shortstop Chelsea Gonzales.

Now it’s time for these teams to adapt and survive like Liam Neeson in “The Grey,” which was one of the best films of 2011. Every film Neeson is in is great, especially when he’s kicking butt and he kicks a lot of wolf butt in “The Grey.” But maybe “Taken” is a better Liam Neeson film to refer to on Day 1 of the postseason.

“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.”

Softball: North Torrance vs. Rosary Live Blog Remix

April 28th, 2012, 8:57 pm by

I did a live blog from the Tustin Columbus Sports Complex on Saturday where Rosary and North Torrance battled for the Foothill Roundtable Invitational championship. Here’s how it went down:

LIVE FROM TUSTIN COLUMBUS SPORTS COMPLEX

I had some technical difficulties, but I finally got online after turning my Droid phone into a LosOCVarsity Hot Spot. I’m at the Tustin Columbus Sports Complex for Rosary vs. North Torrance in the finals of the Foothill Roundtable Invitational.

Rosary knocked off Marina, 6-2, in the semifinals earlier in the day. Kaitlin Fitzgerald hit a three-run homer in that game, giving her 30 RBIs for the season. She is three RBIs behind Katie Chifcian, who had a school-record 33 RBIs in 2005.

North Torrance Bryanna Ybarra had two two-run homers to help the Saxons beat Mater Dei, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Rosary and North Torrance are tied, 0-0, in the bottom of the second. Check that. Amber Perez just dropped  a bomb on Rosary with a two-run jack to left-center field.
