Boys water polo: Regency falls in finals but earns more respect

August 2nd, 2011, 8:54 pm by

Regency’s remarkable run this summer finally came to end Tuesday night as Stanford’s 18-and-under boys water polo club handled the Mater Dei players, 15-11, in the finals of the Junior Olympics in Irvine.

Stanford was the more physical team, especially around the cage. The NorCal team also went 7 for 8 on extra.

“We played the game of our lives,” Stanford coach Brian Kreutzkamp said.

But even in defeat, Regency earned respect for earning a silver medal as essentially a high school team. Stanford features nine players headed to the Division 1 college ranks.

“Unbelievable high school team,” Cal-bound and tournament MVP Colin Mulcahy said Regency. “(Mater Dei) won’t lose a game this year.”
