Signing day: Brethren’s 7-5 Ndiaye to UCI

November 14th, 2012, 2:01 pm by

Brethren Christian 7-foot-5 senior basketball player Mamadou Ndiaye signed today with UC Irvine.

Ndiaye averaged 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots a game last year.

He has improved a great deal over the past couple of years. Ndiaye said in a Brethren statement, “I chose UC Irvine because I felt very comfortable at the University and with the coaching staff.  It is an excellent school that will help me develop as a student and basketball player. ”

Ndiaye is a native of Senegal. Brethren has kept the big buy as low profile as possible, per the Ndiaye family wishes. Thus, there was no announcement that Ndiaye would be signing today.

Signing day: El Dorado baseball signees

November 14th, 2012, 12:36 pm by

Pitchers Joe Record and Seve Romo signed their letters of intent today. Record signed with UC Santa Barbara. Romo signed with University of San Diego.

Record was 1-2 last year with a 1.65 ERA in 17 innings. The highlight of his 2012 season came in the championship game of the National Classic, when Record took a no-hitter into the seventh and final inning of El Dorado’s 4-2 victory over El Toro. It was Record’s first start of the season.

Romo was 0-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 20 innings.

Many, if not most, baseball players get much of their recruiting and scouting attention during their non-high school baseball activity — travel teams, fall ball and the like. Same with basketball recruiting, because of the way the NCAA has fashioned its recruiting calendars.

Not today, the first day of the one-week early signing period in many sports.

That’s because most of the Monarchs top college prospects are not seniors.

There are Mater Dei seniors who will sign, but that will happen in the regular-signing period in April.

Mater Dei’s top college prospect is a junior.

Football: Childhood friends reunite tonight in Pac-5 showdown

September 21st, 2012, 4:55 pm by

Two childhood friends will be on opposing teams tonight when Santa Margarita’s No. 1 ranked football team plays host to St. Bonaventure in a Pac-5 Division showdown at Saddleback College at 7 p.m.

Santa Margarita senior safety R.J. Mazolewski will face off against childhood friend and St. Bonaventure quarterback, rising sophomore Ricky Town.

Mazolewski said he became friends with Town as a 10 or 11-year-old when the two were living in Northern California.  The two played on the same flag football team for two seasons and remained friends.

Mazolewski moved to Orange County after the seventh grade.

The friendship, however, will be put on hold for a couple hours tonight. Mazolewski said he is hoping to collect a hard hit or an interception against Town.

“It will be back to normal after the game,” Mazolewski said of the friendship. “We’ll be back to being friends.”

Mazolewski leads Santa Margarita with two interceptions and is fifth in total tackles with 37. He has received recruiting interest from UC Davis, Cal Poly SLO and San Diego.
