The Orange County Register’s Marcia Smith has written a column on former Tesoro star and Orange County defensive player of the year Preston King. King is on the sidelines these days because he can’t risk his health to continue playing football at San Diego State. You can read the story here.
Preston King, the Orange County defensive player of the year in 2008 at Tesoro, has been diagnosed with a heart condition that will force him to conclude his playing career after one season at San Diego State, Preston’s mother Erin reported in an e-mail this morning.
“It wouldn’t be my decision to quit football cold turkey, but it’s something that I have to do for my safety and for my family,” King told the Register’s Marcia C. Smith by phone today. “I came to this decision because of what doctors have been telling me.
“There’s this degree of not knowing what’s going on, the danger of what could happen next time if I keep playing.”

As I worked on my top-10 ballot for this week’s county football poll, I gave some thought to Mater Dei’s impressive run.
Since their loss to Edison, the Monarchs are 4-0 with convincing victories over Servite and last week, St. John Bosco. But I’m sticking with the Tesoro Titans and Preston King (left) as the county No. 1 heading into Week 10.
Tesoro plays explosive Dana Hills, and Mater Dei takes on nemesis Orange Lutheran.
