No change to water polo format

October 25th, 2012, 9:47 am by

At this morning’s CIF-Southern Section Council meeting — there are three meeting per school year, and at these meetings is where rules and by-laws are created, deleted or amended — a proposal came forth that would change the seeding format for boys and girls water polo playoffs.

The proposal was denied in a rare tie vote.

The proposal: Seed the CIF-SS boys and girls water playoffs strictly by seeding teams 1-16 for the 16-team playoff brackets. This way, two league champions could play each other in the first round, if that is how teams are seeded. Sometimes, one league’s No. 2 team is considered superior to another league’s No. 1.

Currently, playoff brackets in all sports in the CIF-Southern Section are created to divide teams from the same leagues into different portions of the bracket so that those teams from the same league could not play one another until later rounds, and that a league’s No. 1 team would play another league’s No. 3 team, and a No. 2 team plays another No. 2.  That’s the way it is going to stay.

Fryer’s top 10

May 28th, 2012, 10:12 am by

The Orange County top 10 polling concluded at the end of the regular season. If the polling continued through the playoffs, this is how I would have voted today …

1. Orange Lutheran (23-5 … eliminated in the Division 1 quarterfinals;  beat Mater Dei two of three in Trinity League games, so sticking with OLu at No.  1 for now)

2. Mater Dei (24-5 … Division 1 semifinalist; looking confident but not cocky)

3. Esperanza (21-9 … lost to Mater Dei in the D1 quarterfinals)

4. El Toro (25-7 … lost to Newbury Park, 2-0, in D1 second round)

5. Pacifica (26-5 … D2 semifinalist)

6. El Dorado (19-11 … lost to Corona in D1 quarters)

7. Cypress (25-7 … lost to Glendora, D2 second round)

8. Marina (17-11 … lost to Esperanza, D1 second round)

9. Mission Viejo (19-14 … lost to Pacifica, by a lot, D2 quarters)

10. Aliso Niguel (22-11 … D2 semifinalist)

Considered: Trabuco Hills (17-13, D1 semifinalist).

Both teams combined for 7 errors. Sean Whiteman walked in the go-ahead run in the 6th, and Henry Owens took it over from there. The Miami Hurricanes commit struck out three batters in two innings of work to pick up the save.

Orange Lutheran stuns Foothill, awaits Edison (video)

May 20th, 2011, 10:26 pm by

Orange Lutheran defeated Foothill 8-3 in the first round of the division I playoffs. The Lancers will host No.1 ranked Edison next Tuesday.

I asked Orange Lutheran’s Andre Real (HR, 4 RBI) what he thought of Edison:

“I know Henry Owens is a great pitcher…”

I interrupted and told Real that Owens tossed a no-hitter earlier today.

All he could do was laugh.

Baseball playoff predictions

May 18th, 2011, 9:16 am by

It is easier to post comments on the blog-a-rama than on the articles, so take a look at the Fryer predictions here for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, then come back to this blog entry and let us know how right or wrong you think I am. The semi-educated guess is that there will be more comments of disagreement than agreement. That’s cool. I’ve been married close to 28 years, so I am very used to being told how wrong I am!

Fire away, kidz!!!

CIF rainout policy

May 17th, 2011, 11:50 am by

So far, no rainouts/postponements have been sent to me or my online comment buddies fryfrier or RedBarron. Unless FF and RB, smartest baseball guys in Orange County, are holding out on us. Whadya got, fellas?

The Orange County baseball umpires website does not list any ppd. games as of this writing.

Here is the CIF-Southern Section policy re: rainouts …

Grant Jarrett showcases his talents in victory over Orange Lutheran (video)

March 11th, 2011, 1:19 am by

The University of Arizona found a player that Southern California schools will surely regret not recruiting harder.

La Verne Lutheran’s Grant Jarrett did everything but take down the backboard, and he nearly did that in the 4th quarter. The Wildcat commit dropped 30 points, nabbed 16 boards, and swatted away six shots in a 74-58 second-round victory over Orange Lutheran.

“There aren’t many center in high school basketball, but he’s one of them,” Orange Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom said. “He’s as good of a center we’ve played since the Wear twins, I suppose. He is very very good.”

Senior James Douglas played his final game for Orange Lutheran (20 points, seven rebounds), as the Northern Arizona signee went out with a bang. He delivered a number of rim-rattling dunks.

“It’s been a great four years here,” James Douglas said. “We’ve done everything we can, (including) a CIF championship. We wanted to win state, but we gave it our all.”

Orange Lutheran had a number of firsts this year, that included their first CIF championship and their first victory over Mater Dei.

La Verne Lutheran will visit Harvard-Westlake in the Regionals Division 3 semifinals on Saturday.
