The Orange Panthers are hoping that a special part of their past can help lead them to a place they haven’t been in a long time.

Earlier this year, the school announced that head coach Tom Meiss would be returning to the sidelines. Meiss, who has over 40 years of football coaching experience, coached the Panthers from 1989-91, leading the Panthers to the 1989 CIF Division VIII championship game.

“That was one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had in coaching,” he said.

Looking to recapture some of that magic, Meiss embarks on the challenge of turning around a program that finished fifth in league last season and is looking to get back to the CIF playoffs for the first time since 2006.

One of the players that will be key in restoring Orange back into a playoff contending team is versatile senior Edgar Bejarano.

Bejarano, who will start at quarterback for the Panthers, is also the team's starting punter and will see time in the defensive backfield as a safety.

“I like to push my guys as a quarterback to help my team win,” he said. “As a team, we’re faster and stronger than last season and ready to give the top teams in league better competition.”

Another important factor for the Panthers will be the play of senior lineman Francis Talavou, who acknowledges the team has embraced the teachings Coach Meiss and his assistant coaches.

“He is a good coach and his assistant coaches push us, which is a good thing,” he said.

Junior Jake Henry, who will is also expected to see sometime at the quarterback position, is also looking forward to thriving in the environment that Meiss is establishing within the Panthers program.

“He has brought us more confidence and better work ethic,” said Henry.

This week I am picking the Top 5 Series of the Week. Here is one of them:

Westminster (10-9, 7-4) vs. Orange (16-5, 9-2) Wednesday at Westminster; Friday at Orange

When:

Outlook: Westminster had a shot to take over the Golden West League, but last week happened for the Lions. Westminster was swept by Segerstrom, while Orange swept Ocean View.

That’s why the Panthers have a two-game lead heading into this week.

Orange is moving up in the minds of the CIF Division III coaches and the pitching is a key reason. Orange has allowed five runs in its previous four league games (all victories).

Gavin Stoecker (7-0) pitched a complete game Wednesday and Jake Cohen (4-1) allowed one run on three hits Friday.

Steven Garber is 4-1 for the Panthers and he leads them with a .448 batting average.

Westminster’ staff is led by MJ Morales (5-1). Kenny Chapple leads Westminster with a .541 average.

Will Orange’s pitching clinch the league title this week?

Can Westminster stay alive?

(All games start at 3:15 p.m. unless noted)
*Records are through May 4

When: Wednesday at Orange; Friday at Ocean View

Outlook: Orange begins the week tied for first place in the Golden West League with Westminster. Ocean View is one-game back after splitting a two-game series with Santa Ana last week.

All three teams were tied for first place heading into last week.

While these two teams are meeting this week, Westminster is playing Segerstrom. Then next week, Westminster and Orange will meet.

The Panthers defeated the Seahawks, 5-4, in the first meeting.

Orange’s rotation is led by Gavin Stoecker, who is 6-2 with a 1.52 ERA, and Steve Garber, who is 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA.

The Seahawks also have some good arms in the rotation. Alfredo Sepulveda, a sophomore, is 5-2 after striking out 12 in an 8-0 victory over Santa Ana.

Andrew Bynum is 5-3 with a 1.57 ERA for the Seahawks.

Which pitching rotation will have the upper hand?

Division II second round

El Modena (23-6) vs. Long Beach Wilson (14-12) at Belmont Plaza, 3:15 p.m.

Prediction: The Vanguards earned the first playoff in their school history Tuesday but still feel they are seeking respect. While some fans on the blogs have not given El Modena the respect it is due, a tight score against the fifth-seeded Bruins should help. Moore League champ Long Beach Wilson, the former Division I juggernaut, wins the match but if the up-and-coming Vanguards bring their A-game and Erich Schwamb catches fires, they can make it close.

Unlike Servite last week, I believe the Eagles will try to challenge Orange Lutheran's talented secondary. Santa Margarita has rushed for just over 500 yards as a team while their QB, Ryan World, has passed for just under 2,000 yards.

World also has one of the better WRs in the county in Gavin Escobar.

But in taking flight, the Eagles will encounter arguably the best secondary in the county. One player to keep an eye on is Orange Lutheran DB Terrence Brown (5-11, 170). The senior was recently offered a scholarship by Oregon. He also has been offered by Stanford.

Brown and Irvine lineman Nik Abele are two of the top uncommitted seniors in the county. Both could be headed to the Pac-10.

Orange Lutheran probably faced the most dynamic offense that it will see this season Friday night when it took on St. John Bosco of Bellflower.

The Braves entered the game undefeated and averaging 41.5 points. Orange Lutheran slowed electrifying QB Keith Price, on the way to winning 34-21.

Orange Lutheran coach Jim Kunau couldn't single out one particular defensive player, so this week's award is going out to the entire Lancers defense.

The Lancers limited Price's big plays, holding him to 197 yards passing (18 of 31), 15 rushing yards, sacked him four times and intercepted him twice.

Mater Dei basketball players Lyndsay Heard, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, and Mya Olivier, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, have committed to Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton, respectively, said Coach Kevin Kiernan in an e-mail in Wednesday morning.
Sounds like the Monarchs will be a team to watch this season.

They have a intriguing talent in senior Erich Schwamb, who plays both ends of the pool well. They also have plenty of young talent, so it appears El Modena could be my radar for some time. First-year coach Jeff Gorman is doing a nice job.
