Baseball: Calhoun’s random thoughts on the week

April 4th, 2009, 12:07 pm by

** I went to the El Toro-Foothill game on Friday thinking that Chad Thompson was getting the start for the Chargers. He didn’t, but I did see a pitcher whose name that you should write down: Colin Welmon of Foothill. The sophomore probably deserved a victory, but lost, 1-0. He had good movement and velocity. He allowed five hits in a complete game and will be a force in the future.

** El Toro’s Nolan Arenado is a vacuum at short.

Baseball: A week’s worth of highlights

April 4th, 2009, 11:09 am by

Another week of league play has passed and here are my picks for the noteworthy highlights:

Tuesday (March 31)

** Foothill scores eight runs on four hits in an 8-4 victory over Northwood.

** In the Pacific Coast League, Beckman smashes three home runs in an 11-3 victory over Laguna Hills. Ricky Navarro’s three-run blast in the sixth gave the Patriots the lead for good.

** Marina scores 15 runs on 18 hits in a 15-5 victory over its Sunset League rival, Los Alamitos.
