Football: Should O.C. all-star football game move to January? (poll)

January 15th, 2013, 5:30 pm by

I attended an organizing meeting today for the annual Brea Lions O.C. all-star football game, which will be played this June 28 at Orange Coast College. It will be the 54th edition of an well-run and well-followed game for charity.

The game is a summer classic but how about moving it to early January? That’s when all-star games such as the U.S. Army, Under Armour and Semper Fidelis play.

My main reason for moving the game is to attract more top county players to the O.C. classic. The schedules of the top college-bound players don’t seem to mix well these days with an O.C. all-star game positioned in the summer. So many of the top seniors depart early in the summer to enroll in summer school with their colleges or work out with their college teams. But if the O.C. game was played in January, I have a feeling more of the county stars would come out.

And it’s not like the national all-star games are taking a ton of the county players. Between the three games mentioned above, I believe the county had about six representatives this year. There are so many more outstanding county players available in January to play an all-star game.

Details would need to be worked out to make the change, but I think I would be a worthy attempt. How about you? And major stumbling blocks to discuss? Post your thoughts

Orange Lutheran’s Mike Markovsky is likely to start at quarterback for the North in tonight’s Brea Lions Orange County all-star football game. It would be a cool honor for Markovsky but he also is looking forward to his future at the Naval Academy.

Markovsky reports to the Naval Academy Prep School on July 24. The plan is to attend the prep school for one year and then transfer to main academy. He was recruited as an athlete but his position could end up being safety.

Football: South all-stars lose three running backs

July 7th, 2011, 7:36 am by

The South continued to prepare Wednesday night for the upcoming Brea Lions Orange County all-star football game but will be without three top running backs in the July 15 game.

Mission Viejo’s Dallas Kessman, Woodbridge’s Jalen Craver and Segerstrom’s Gary Ferman (Sacramento State) will not play against the North at Orange Coast College, South coach Myron Miller of Tustin said during the workout at Tustin.

Miller said Kessman, a first-team All-County pick bound for San Diego, suffered a shoulder injury during the inaugural Arizona-Southern California all-star game last month in Surprise, Arizona.

The South still features some good options at running back.

Football: Ex-Fairmont Prep star facing jail time for robbery

June 29th, 2011, 11:33 am by

Fairmont Prep offensive lineman Earle Austin, expected to be part of next month’s Orange County all-star football game game, is facing a maximum sentence of four years in state prison after pleading guilty to attempted second-degree robbery, his lawyer confirmed Wednesday morning.

Austin, listed at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, also is facing a sentencing enhancement for being part of a robbery where a firearm was used, said his court appointed lawyer, Randy Ladisky. Austin didn’t have a gun in an attempted robbery in Brea on June 22, Ladisky said.

Police allege that Austin was part of  an attempted robbery of a marijuana dispensary employee delivering to an apartment complex. One of the men who confronted the dispensary employee and his armed security guard was reportedly shot and killed.

Austin pleaded guilty on Monday at his sentencing in the county jail court.
