Calm surf dominates day 2 of NSSA Nationals

Suspense continued to mount at the NSSA National Championships at Huntington Beach Pier on Wednesday, as the competition worked through the opening rounds of the Open Juniors and Open Women’s divisions in anticipation of the finals on Saturday.

Surfers had to make the best of a two to three foot waves, leading to some lower scores in the tougher conditions.

Still, seven Orange County surfers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Open Juniors, surviving the 16 separate first round heats.

Team heats kick off NSSA Nationals

Huntington Beach was dotted with school sweatshirts and team tents Tuesday during the first day of the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s National Championships at Huntington Beach Pier.

The competition, which includes surfers from throughout the NSSA’s conferences on the East Coast, West Coast and Hawaii, featured preliminary heats in the high school varsity and JV division on Tuesday, with surfers enjoying the two- to four-foot high surf.
