CIF-SS FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: NORTHEAST DIVISION
First round
SALESIAN (9-1) vs. CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN (8-2)
Where, when: Salesian High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: The Mustangs are the fourth seed in the division. Their only loss came in the second game of the season, 48-34 to Los Altos of Hacienda Heights. Salesian went 4-0 in the Santa Fe League. If you’re looking for a team that might be peaking, Salesian might be it. In its past four games, all victories, the Mustangs have outscored their opposition by a combined score of 213-10. Quarterback Jihad Vercher is one to watch. The senior passed for 1,996 yards with 19 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also rushed for 777 and 15 touchdowns. Jamarde Cobb has 100 tackles. The Eagles finished second in the San Joaquin League. Last year, the Eagles played 8-man football. The transition has been led by a predominantly young group. There are only five seniors on the roster, but the younger players are doing just fine. Sophomore quarterback Riley Babick has completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,035 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions. Freshman Ben Sukut has 76 receptions for 1,077 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has six interceptions, including four that were returned for touchdowns in last week’s 55-14 victory over Southlands Christian of Walnut. The Eagles’ two losses came to league champion Saddleback Valley Christian and third-seed Boron.
