DIVISION 1

CORONA DEL MAR (25-4) VS. FOOTHILL (25-3)

Site, time: William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, 5 p.m.

Outlook: The second-seeded Knights (ranked No. 1 in the county) are 2-0 against No. 3 seeded Corona del Mar. Foothill posted a 9-7 victory at the early-season Holiday Cup before Greek transfers Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis, pictured above, became eligible and a 6-5 triumph in the semifinals of the recent Irvine SoCal tournament.

Girls water polo: Foothill seniors racking up college commitments

Four Foothill girls water polo players have made college commitments, Knights coach Jeff Colton reports.

The four are defender Eleanor Lee (Loyola Marymount), goalie Kelsey Roland (Cal), utility Nikki Stansfield (USC) and attacker Ashley Zwirner (UCLA).

Foothill’s strong senior class also includes three other recruits to watch: Hannah Lapkin, Katy Schneider and Brenna Thomas.

The first day girls water polo players can sign letters of intent is Nov. 14.

Girls water polo: No. 3 Foothill edges No. 7 El Toro in overtime

Emerging Foothill junior Brenna Thomas believes her team received a wake-up when it was upset by Newport Harbor — without Maddy McLaren — earlier this season.

Foothill coach Jeff Colton said his squad received another wake-up call Wednesday night from El Toro. The Knights needed a goal from Nicole Stansfield with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime and a strike from Thomas in the first, three-minute extra period to post an 11-10 victory.

Colton credited El Toro for playing well, and rightfully so. Allison Skaggs is one of the top centers in the county and goalie Emily Browning can be tough when she gets hot. But Foothill clearly didn’t expect this one to be so close.

“We’re not trying to provide this much entertainment to our parents,” Colton said.

Foothill (Division 1) and El Toro (Division 2) are both teams to watch this season.
