Girls volleyball video: Newport Harbor defeats Los Al to win championship

The Sailors captured their eighth CIF volleyball title and their first one since 2002 with their victory over Los Alamitos on Saturday night. Newport won in four games, 27-29, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.

Football playoffs: Newport Harbor's reaction to playoff spot

football_blog6Newport Harbor coach Jeff Brinkley is across the street from the CIF-Southern Section office here in Los Alamitos, having breakfast with Harbor coaches at Hof's Hut.

"I figured we would get in," he said. "Looking at the criteria, we're the team that fit. I would have been surprised and very disappointed if we didn't get in."

Football: Another coin flip coming up in the Sunset?

football_blogLast year, there was a five-way tie for first with these teams at 3-2: Edison; Esperanza; Fountain Valley; Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor.

A series of coin flips took Edison and Newport Harbor out of the playoffs (and Newport Harbor had won its final three games, including victories over Esperanza and Los Alamitos, both of which made the playoffs via those coin flips).
