Swim: Edison-product Shields helps Cal dethrone Stanford

Cal senior swimmer Tom Shields (Edison) captured the 200-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 41.23 seconds to help the Golden Bears capture the Pac-12 men’s title at Federal Way, Wash., ending Stanford’s legendary 31-year streak of winning the conference titles.

Cal scored 825 points to outdistance runner-up Stanford at 800. USC took third with 638.5.

Swim: Edison product Shields wins twice, puts Cal in contention at Pac-12′s

Cal senior swimmer Tom Shields (Edison) won the 100-yard butterfly (44.92 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (46.12) and gave his team the lead for good in the third leg of the 400 medley relay to help the Golden Bears open a 583-520 lead against Stanford at the Pac-12 swim championships in Federal Way, Wash. on Tuesday.

The meet concludes on Wednesday, and it could be a huge victory for the Shields and his teammates.

Stanford has captured 31 consecutive conference titles.

Swim: Edison product Shields edges Lochte for silver at Worlds

Former Edison swimmer Tom Shields, pictured far left, edged Ryan Lochte for the silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the FINA short-course World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday.

The Cal senior out-touched Lochte by five one-hundredths of a second to finish in 49.54, about three-quarter of a second behind winner Chad Le Clos of South Africa.

Le Clos tied for the silver behind Michael Phelps in the 100-meter fly at the London Games earlier this year but edged Phelps for gold in the 200 fly final.

A few swim teams in Orange County can take in pride in Shields.

Swim: Aliso Niguel's Burns makes it official with NCAA champs

Aliso Niguel and Mission Viejo Nadadores swimmer Janardan Burns signed Wednesday with reigning NCAA champion Cal, the senior in a text message.

Burns captured the 500-yard freestyle at the CIF Division 1 finals in May.

Diving recruiting: El Toro’s Anderson headed to Lone Star state

El Toro senior and Mission Viejo Nadadores standout diver Mark Anderson has committed to the University of Texas, his mother, Janet, confirmed Friday.

Anderson has captured the past two CIF-SS Division 1 championships and competed at the U.S. Olympic trials earlier this year.

Swim: Mission Viejo’s Heron heading to SEC

Mission Viejo High and Mission Viejo Nadadores standout distance swimmer David Heron has committed to Tennessee, the senior confirmed.

Heron, who finished fourth in the 500-yard free (4:30.59) at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals in May, made Tennessee his only official recruiting trip.

At Tennessee, he will be reunited with his former Nadadores coach, Tyler Fenwick, now an associate coach for the Vols. Heron captured the 5k U.S. open water national title in April, swam at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials and also claimed the 10K at the U.S. Junior Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Swim: Aliso Niguel’s Burns commits to NCAA power

Aliso Niguel and Mission Viejo Nadadores swimmer Janardan Burns has committed to two-time defending NCAA men’s champion Cal, the senior confirmed Thursday.

“I really liked the campus, they have a great business school (and) all the guys on the team are awesome,” Burns said in a text message of his commitment. “(Also) Dave (Durden) is a great coach.”

Burns captured the CIF-SS Division 1 title last season in the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 23.55 seconds).

During the summer, the All-County performer captured the 400-meter freestyle at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Indianapolis.

The U.S. junior team member also finished third in the open water 10K at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii.

Burns is the first swimming recruit from Orange County to commit.

Swim: Mission Viejo’s Heron takes gold at Junior Pan Pacs

Swimmer David Heron of Mission Viejo High and the Mission Viejo Nadadores club captured the open water 10K at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii on Monday.

The senior finished in 1 hour, 42 minutes and one second. The Nadadores’ Janardan Burns (Aliso Niguel) placed third in 1:45.57.

Capistrano Valley’s Brooke Lorentzen of the Nadadores placed ninth in the women’s 10K.

Swim: Nadadores’ Burns strikes gold at junior nationals

Senior swimmer Janardan Burns of Aliso Niguel and the Mission Viejo Nadadores captured the 400-meter freestyle in 3 minutes, 56.54 seconds at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Sophomore Katie McLaughlin of JSerra and the Nadadores stayed hot by finishing second in the 100 butterfly in a swift 59.81.

Burns and McLaughlin captured the 500-yard free and 100 fly, respectively, at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals in May.

Swim: Nadadores’ Lorentzen, Heron collect silver at juniors

Swimmers Brooke Lorentzen (Capistrano Valley) and David Heron (Mission Viejo) placed second in their distance finals at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Indianapolis on Monday.

Lorentzen, pictured left, took the silver behind North Baltimore’s world-ranked Gillian Ryan in the women’s 800-meter free by clocking a time of 8 minutes, 43.92 seconds. Ryan won the duel of 16-year-olds with a meet-record 8:30.84 (she has been 8:29.55 this year).

Heron, 17, placed second in the men’s 1,500 free in 15:28.50. Team Santa Monica’s Jordan Wilimovsky touched first in a meet-record 15:23.01. Janardan Burns of the Nadadores and Aliso Niguel placed fourth in 15:30.40.

Katie McLaughlin of the Nadadores and JSerra took third in the 200 fly in 2:12.92.

Diving: Anderson’s run at Olympic Trials ends in semifinals

Mark Anderson’s run at the U.S. Olympic diving trials ended late Monday night in the semifinals of the 10-meter platform in Federal Way, Wash.

The El Toro senior-to-be and Mission Viejo Nadadores’ diver finished 16th in the semifinals. Only the top-12 finishers advanced to Saturday’s finals.

In a semifinals packed with 10′s, Olympian David Boudia emerged with the lead going into finals.

Diving: Anderson reaches semifinals at U.S. Olympic Trials

Diver Mark Anderson of El Toro and the Mission Viejo Nadadores has reached the semifinals of the 10-meter platform at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials in Federal Way, Washington.

The senior-to-be finished 18th in prelims to claim the final spot in the semifinals with a six-dive score of 288.35.

Anderson earned as high as 6.5′s on three of his dives but dipped into the 4.0′s on three others, including his last two dives.

Former Santa Margarita diver Conor Murphy narrowly semifinals with a 19th-place finish while Cole Young of Long Beach-based McCormick Divers was 17th. He is a graduate student at UC Irvine.
