Handing out Mater Dei-Carson game balls

September 3rd, 2008, 10:49 pm by

And this was only the season opener! Mater Dei and Carson staged what can be described as an instant classic. The Monarchs trailed, 34-20, in the second half (and I thought it was over).

The Monarchs then staged a rally to tie the score at 34-34 with 10:38 to go in the fourth to send the game into overtime. Read the rest of this entry »

Fryer’s analysis: Mater Dei shaky but worthy of No. 1

September 3rd, 2008, 10:42 pm by

A fan wearing Carson gear looked at the Mater Dei celebration and said, “They look like they just won the championship.” Hey, Mater Dei was ecstatic, and relieved,  just to have won. Read the rest of this entry »

New year, new targets for Barkley

September 3rd, 2008, 10:17 pm by

A lot was said about Mater Dei having an inexperienced group of wide receivers this season. After Wednesday night’s thrilling — and exhausting — season-opening overtime victory over Carson, 46-43, they might not be inexperienced anymore. Read the rest of this entry »

Mater Dei scores on Barkley pass, wins in 3OTs

September 3rd, 2008, 9:41 pm by

On the first play, Barkley throws a knuckler that Campbell goes up for and brings down for the TD.Final score — Mater Dei 46, Carson 43.A text message from our Damien Calhoun: “I’m exausted!”

Carson takes the lead …

September 3rd, 2008, 9:39 pm by

A 28-yard FG is good on fourth down.So it is 43-40, Carson.Mater Dei gets the ball at the 10. You have to like MD’s chances here.

Carson’s possession …

September 3rd, 2008, 9:35 pm by

An incompletion by QB Torres under duress — -and they call intentional grounding … that’s a tough call, since Torres was being hit while throwing, so that could have been why the ball got nowhere near a receiver.Second down — Torres runs left to the Mater Dei 6.Third and goal at the 6 — Carson lined up for a 25-yard field goal attempt … and another bad snap. The holder pounced on the loose ball …So on fourth and goal a 33-yard field goal attemp is blocked. If I have a handle on this now, Carson gets the ball first and MD has to match what Carson does. This is the longest game, in time required for completion, I have covered in 19 years, I am pretty sure.

Barkley threw an INT

… so it’s Carson’s turn at the 10.And if Carson scores, that’s it. No opportunity for Mater Dei to match that.

TD pass by Barkley …

September 3rd, 2008, 9:27 pm by

… but nullified by a Mater Dei holding penalty. Fropmo the spot of the foul — the 13 — that puts the Monarchs back to the 23-yard line. And they cannot get first downs.I like the CIF-Southern Section tiebreaker rules a bit better.

So it’s 40-40

September 3rd, 2008, 9:26 pm by

And now Mater Dei gets the ball first, and Carson has to match what the Monarchs do.LA City rules are interesting.

Mater Dei’s ball …

September 3rd, 2008, 9:24 pm by

Barkley hit Campbell for a touchdown — and the PAT is blocked by Carson’s Chris Hill, who had an INT earlier.Wild game!

OK, check this out on the OT rules

September 3rd, 2008, 9:20 pm by

Since Carson is the home team and Carson is a CIF-Los Angeles City Section team, we are going by LA City OT rulesSo the ball is at the 10 — four shots at the end zone. You can get PATs and two-point conversions.Carson just scored — and while lined up for the PAT a lineman moved, so that backs it up 5 yards, which could be significant.

We can hear Rollinson up here

September 3rd, 2008, 9:16 pm by

During the pre-OT break, with the Mater Dei players kneeling around him, MD coach Bruce Rollinson yelled, “They’re out of gas! They’re out of gas!”
