Boys water polo: Mater Dei’s Baron makes college decision

All-County water polo goalie McQuin Baron has decided to keep Mater Dei’s pipeline to reigning NCAA champion USC flowing strong.

The 6-foot-8 goalie has committed to the five-time defending NCAA champions, who have already signed Mater Dei senior center Jon Walters and received a verbal commitment from Walters’ brother, junior attacker James Walters.

Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman confirmed Baron’s commitment Thursday morning.

As a three-year starter, Baron has helped Mater Dei claim three consecutive CIF-SS Division 1 titles.

Water polo recruiting: Mater Dei’s Walters inks with national champs

Mater Dei water polo player and Register player of the year Jon Walters has signed today with reigning NCAA champion USC, Monarchs coach Chris Segesman confirmed.

Walters’ brother, James, a junior, has already committed to the Trojans.

And there’s the next week: Will Mater Dei junior goalie McQuin Baron also follow the Walters brothers to USC? Baron has expressed early interest in USC, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Cal, Segesman said Tuesday night.

In other recruiting news, Loyola’s Chancellor Ramirez signed with UCLA on Wednesday.

Boys water polo: County stars, U.S. men to play Agrentina at Northwood

Ten Orange County boys water polo players, including Mater Dei’s Jon Walters and McQuin Baron, will be part of a Southern California all-star high school team that will play Argentina’s national team in exhibition match Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Northwood.

The match is being sponsored by Northwood Water Polo Club and will be streamed live on ibnsports.com in association with golivepolo.com.

The U.S. national men’s water polo team will also play Argentina at 4:45 p.m. at Northwood on Saturday. Team USA and Argentina are preparing for the upcoming UANA Qualification Tournament in Calgary, which starts next week.

The U.S. national team features ex-county standouts such as Bret Bonanni (Mater Dei), a sophomore-to-be at Stanford, and UCLA’s Paul Reynolds (Foothill) and Olympians such as Ryan Bailey and Jeff Powers.

Boys water polo: Mater Dei-Long Beach Wilson preview/CIF finals schedule

Outlook: Top-seeded Mater Dei is seeking a fifth consecutive Southern Section title, including a third straight Division 1 crown. The Monarchs face a second-seeded Long Beach Wilson squad featuring key players who helped the Bruins claim the Division 2 title last season. Long Beach Wilson is led by attacker Maxwell Irving and 2-meter man Jackson Kimbell, last season’s Division 2 player of the year. Mater Dei is 2-0 against Long Beach Wilson this season.

Boys water polo: Regency captures Ironman 16-and-older title

Regency’s boys water polo team defeated Los Angeles Water Polo Club, 9-5, to capture the Ironman’s 16-and-older Super Final over the weekend at Newport Harbor.

The Ironman is a high-level club league that features many of the top high school-age players in Southern California.

Mater Dei senior-to-be center Jon Walters of Regency was selected MVP while Mater Dei junior-to-be McQuin Baron earned the best goalie award.

Chris Segesman of Regency and Mater Dei was selected best coach.

Chancellor Ramirez of bronze medalist Rose Bowl and Loyola of Los Angeles was named best defender.

Willis Allen of Long Beach Shore claimed the Klaus Barth award.

Boys water polo: Mater Dei’s winning streak hits 40

Bret Bonanni, left, and Jon Walters combined for 13 goals and McQuin Baron made 19 saves to lead Mater Dei’s boys water polo team to its 40th consecutive victory Tuesday in a 13-7 triumph against visiting Long Beach Wilson.

Mater Dei, now 23-0 this fall, moved into sole possession of fifth place for longest winning streaks in CIF-Southern Section history.

Bonanni netted eight goals and now has 101 this season.

Boys water polo: Orange County places five on U.S. youth team

Three players from Mater Dei’s reigning CIF-SS Division 1 champion boys water polo team along with Villa Park senior-to-be BJ Churnside and Los Alamitos junior-to-be Chandler Jarrels have been selected to the U.S. men’s youth team bound for Italy in August.

The Monarchs placed sophomores-to-be McQuin Baron (goalie), James Walters and Kent Inoue on the squad that will be coached by former Newport Harbor coach Jason Lynch, now assisting at Foothill.

The U.S. squad will play in the Acireale Tournament in Italy on August 3-14.
